I hate him, I hate him, I hate him…” Was Jounouchi’s chant as he stalked down the school corridors.
Yuugi half-trotted to keep up with him, a placating expression on his face. “Calm down, Jounouchi-kun. I’m sure he didn’t mean to insult you.”
“Oh yes he did.” Jounouchi growled back at his best friend. “Just like -I- meant ta insult -him-.”
Only it hadn’t worked out quite so well. As in completely utterly failed on his part.
Jounouchi Katsuya was the son of the Superintendent General of the Domino Metropolitan Police, and had a reputation as a fledgling detective. His parents had split up several years prior, his mother missing her native New York and he’d spent a few years with her in the States before returning to Japan.
He’d come back for one simple reason.
Ryuu the Phantom Thief.
The mysterious thief, or ‘Kaitou’, had appeared on the scene previously that year, targeting anything that was either made of large quantities of gold, or Egyptian. Usually both.
And he –always- got away.
Which was pretty damn impressive for a guy who freakin’ –announced- his thefts and wore white at night.
Jounouchi was bound and determined to catch him. The thief had returned some items, or conveniently ‘dropped’ them during his escape, but six items hadn’t been returned, each one with supposed mystical properties. Six of the Sennen Items.
And it looked like the Kaitou Ryuu was after a seventh, Jounouchi’s best friend Yuugi’s puzzle The puzzle was Yuugi’s treasure, a gold upside down pyramid that the small boy always wore around his neck like a pendant. He’d worked on it for eight years before finally completing it shortly before he and Jounouchi had become friends. There was something mysterious about the puzzle and Yuugi, other than his strange anti-gravity starfish hair, but Jounouchi hadn’t quite figured out what yet.
Not that he was trying particularly hard. He was just grateful to have made a friend as quickly as he had. And Yuugi was a good friend.
Unlike some other people in his class. Kaiba Seto, billionaire and owner of Kaiba Corporation was a constant thorn in his side. He didn’t know what he had done in a past life to piss off the tall blue eyed boy, but it must have been bad. He’d been repeatedly told by classmates that usually the only thing that would even -annoy- Kaiba was harming his little brother Mokuba.
Jounouchi had never even met Mokuba, much less insulted him. Yet shouting matches with the billionaire had somehow become a daily occurrence.
Unfortunately, for Jounouchi’s self admittedly hair-trigger temper, Kaiba had the habit of coming out on top in their little snarking contests. Like today.
Yuugi frowned at him, more of a pout really. The spiky haired boy didn’t like it when people didn’t get along. Jounouchi sighed, taking a deep breath and let it out. He really had to stop letting Kaiba get under his skin like that. But he really hated being called a-
“Mutt.” Kaiba’s oh-so-cool sneer interrupted his mental dialogue. Kaiba always referred to him by canine names. ‘Mutt’ and ‘Police Dog’ were two of his favourite.
Jounouchi spun around, already bristling. It was on the tip of his tongue to insult back, but he could see Yuugi staring at him. “Kaiba.” He spat instead.
“Good luck with catching Ryuu tonight.” Kaiba smirked. “I’m sure you’ll need it.”
Kaiba wasn’t actually a fan of Kaitou Ryuu, he just liked to rub it in Jounouchi’s face that the blond couldn’t seem to catch the thief.
“Thanks.” He drawled sarcastically. “I’ll be sure to pass your warm wishes on to Ryuu as well.”
“You do that.” Kaiba turned his attention to Yuugi, his expression far more polite, if distant. “Motou. No hard feelings.”
And with that cryptic comment, Kaiba strode off, the crowd parting before him like a knife through jell-o.
“What the hell did that mean?” He grumbled.
“Language, Jounouchi-kun.” Yuugi scolded. He grimaced in response. He was getting better about swearing. Slowly. Mostly because of Yuugi’s influence.
“Your ‘Jiichan still okay with me spending the night?” He questioned instead, changing the subject. School was out, they had homework to do and a heist to prepare for. He certainly didn’t want to hang out here longer than he had to.
“I told you, Jounouchi-kun.” Yuugi bounced a little, happily this time, not to keep pace with him. “’Jiichan -likes- you. You’re welcome at my house anytime.”
“Yeah, well…” He trailed off, running a hand through is hair. Yuugi liked everyone, he didn’t have a mean bone in his body. But Jounouchi didn’t quite fit into school, the blond hair he inherited from his Mom standing out like a bright shining target at school. Mixed with his gangster attitude it tended put him on the ‘not parentally approved’ list, detective or no. He could dye his hair black to fit in, but that just wasn’t him.
Yuugi just smiled reassuringly at him and began to talk excitedly about some of the newest games they had gotten in at his grandfather’s game shop. Games were Yuugi’s life.
He just hoped his skills were enough to protect his friend’s most treasured one.
+++
The note was simple. 20:00. Kame Game Shop. Sennen Puzzle. And then signed with a little caricature of a dragon that had lead to the Kaitou’s nickname of ‘Ryuu’, a Japanese word for ‘Dragon’.
Jounouchi doubted it would be that simple however. Things rarely were.
Nakamori Ginzo, the police inspector that was head of the Kaitou Ryuu Task Force was Yuugi’s Uncle, his mother’s brother. Jounouchi thought it would have been impossible to tell if he hadn’t seen Yuugi’s mom. The strange spiky hair was genetic, Yuugi’s Grandfather and Father had it, but his mom was just as normal looking as the next person.
What did set Nakamori apart from most people however, was his temper. It was worse than Jounouchi’s. And the older guy had a bigger vocabulary as well. Jounouchi had once been treated to a fifteen minute long tirade on civilians interfering with police work and Nakamori hadn’t repeated a swear the entire time. Nakamori had both Jounouchi’s respect and a ten-metre blast radius that Jounouchi made sure he stayed clear of.
Currently Nakamori was shouting as his men, making last minute preparations. Not that it would do any good, really. Kaitou Ryuu was a master of disguise and had more of an arsenal than Batman himself. They still weren’t completely sure on the thief’s methods, just that he got in, got out and no one could figure out how.
Jounouchi was watching from Yuugi’s window, which was upstairs above the game shop. Nakamori had wanted to replace the puzzle with a fake, but Yuugi had been adamant about not removing the puzzle from around his neck. And for a scrawny guy, Yuugi was hard to argue with once he’d made up his mind.
He also swung a mean frying pan.
So while the police were setting up outside to keep the thief from coming in, Jounouchi was staying with Yuugi, to keep the thief from getting out. Not that he didn’t have any trust in the police… but the track record kind of spoke for itself.
“You ready?” He asked Yuugi. Yuugi was sitting on his bed, the puzzle cradled thoughtfully between his hands. He seemed to be communicating with it silently.
Yuugi smiled at him, looking vaguely melancholy. “As we’re going to be.” He put the cord back around his neck and stood up, picking up a frying pan from beside him as he did so, a serious look on his face. He was ready.
Jounouchi patted him on the back. “Good.”
A shout came from outside, getting their attention. It was eight o’clock and Kaitou Ryuu had been spotted outside. The police surged off, chasing his pale shadow. Yuugi’s hand on his arm stopped him from charging to the window to look. “Wait.”
Jounouchi turned to look at his friend again. Yuugi… Yuugi was different. It was still Yuugi, just taller, with spikier hair and an aura around him that almost seemed menacing. “Yuugi?”
Movement out of the corner of his eye drew his attention away from the changes in Yuugi. Kaitou Ryuu was there, his white cape being blown around him by the wind from the window. “You!”
He’d never seen Kaitou Ryuu up close, all of their encounters had been from a distance with him unable to get any closer. The thief was taller than he expected, obviously fit but still on the lean side. He was dressed in his trademark white suit, top hat, cape and a monocle hiding his face. This close he could make out that the thief had brown hair and that the shirt under the suit was black, with a blue tie. Obviously a well made suit or the material underneath would have shown through.
He had enough time to be grateful that he was between the thief and his friend when Kaitou Ryuu did something unexpected. He smirked.
Jounouchi –knew- that smirk. He saw it nearly every day. But before he could place where he saw it, the thief held up a golden rod, with what looked like a winged eyeball on the end of it. And then thinking was done from a distance.
It was like he was floating outside of his body, everything was drifting, detached. He could hear voices, see movement, but it was all distorted, having no relevance to what was going on. He was vaguely aware of motion around him, but paid no attention to it.
“Jounouchi!”
Something pushed at him, but it was insubstantial, insignificant really. Just an annoyance, like the buzz in his ears.
“Jounouchi! Fight it, Jounouchi!!!”
He was touching something, cool and smooth. He was supposed to grab that thing. That’s right. Grab it and deliver it to someone else.
“Snap out of it, Jounouchi!”
It was familiar, with sharp edges on it. A glimmer of gold caught his attention.
“JOUNOUCHI!”
Gold. Yuugi’s puzzle. He had his hands around Yuugi’s puzzle.
Reality reinserted itself.
He was in Yuugi’s room, protecting Yuugi and his treasure from Ryuu the Phantom Thief. So why was he holding on to it, nearly strangling Yuugi in the process? He yanked his hands back, nearly dropping his friend on the floor. “Yuugi?! What happened? I’m so sorry!”
“Not your fault.” Yuugi assured him. His friend’s eyes were still as friendly towards him as ever, but there was still that dangerous aura around him. Especially when he looked –past- Jounouchi, at Kaitou Ryuu.
Jounouchi turned, adding his glare as well. “What did you do to me?”
“I’m impressed.” Kaitou Ryuu drawled. “The Pharaoh trained his dog well. Very well, I shall get it another way, some other time.”
With a shower of sparkling lights that reminded Jounouchi of the Duel Monsters hologram exploding, Kaitou Ryuu disappeared.
Jounouchi took a step forward, looking around to make sure the thief was really and truly gone, but not willing to leave his friend vulnerable.
“He’s gone.” Yuugi commented, his voice full of calm authority. Jounouchi covertly watched as his friend closed his eyes and sighed, almost appearing to shrink in on himself. When Yuugi looked up again, it was the wide-eyed innocent he was used to seeing again. “Thanks.”
“I didn’t do anything.” He muttered. Except get in the way and apparently almost kill his best friend. Just what exactly had happened there? What had the Kaitou Ryuu done anyway?
“You did too.” Yuugi smiled at him. “You did more than you know.”
He shrugged it off and glanced out the window. Nakamori and his men appeared to be crawling out of a giant dogpile with apparently no one on the bottom of it. He sighed.
“I guess we should get ready for bed.” Yuugi stretched, looking all cute and sleepy. “Did you bring your toothbrush, Jounouchi-kun?”
“Yeah.” He agreed distractedly, various details of the encounter niggling at his brain. Kyuu had referred to him as the Pharaoh’s Dog. The thief had been addressing Yuugi at the time, meaning that Kaitou Kyuu had just called him a Dog.
There was only one other person that called him a dog.
Kaiba Seto had the money to be able to pull off strange elaborate heists. Turning the holographic technology he was famous for towards disguises and thefts could explain a lot of the tricks the Kaitou Ryuu pulled off.
But there was no way that stick-up-his-ass Kaiba could be Ryuu the Phantom Thief.
… was there?

Date: 2006-02-01 08:45 pm (UTC)Po'e inspired a Bakura/Kaiba conversation one last night, but that's about it.
Current cast of characters kinda runs like this:
Kaiba = Kaito
Jounouchi = Hakuba
Yuugi = Aoko
Bakura = Koizumi
Doesn't -quite- equivulate cause it would mean Aoko's hanging out with Hakuba instead of Kaito, but it still kinda works... ^_^;;;

Date: 2006-02-01 09:16 pm (UTC)And because the plunnie has bit me (it could use a lot of work, I'm just typing it out here):
Mokuba watched his elder brother walk out of the room, a smug grin twitched at the corners of niisan's mouth. He sighed and went back to his programing. His brother had been that way since Kaitou Ryuu had reasserted his presence in the world. Just how his niisan had found out what their birth father did, remained a mystery.
"It's not as if he walked in on him changing one day...like I did," he muttered to the monitor.
His brother passed back through the room, wearing a business-like expression and carrying a duffel bag over one shoulder. As he was walking through the door, Mokuba said, "Don't get hurt, niisan."
Seto stopped for a moment, blinked, and finally settled on giving his brother a smile. "Don't worry, I'm just going to go play with a dog tonight."

Whoops, I meant for it to imply that he saw his father changing from it when he was little, that he knows about his brother but hasn't outright said anything (like Kaito's mom! Yes, Mokuba as Kaito's mom. XD )

Date: 2006-02-01 10:49 pm (UTC)Mokuba - Kaito's Mom -?
XD XD XD That totally works!!!
Mokuba leaned back in his chair as he watched his brother leave. "Did you remember your holographic disks? I left the ones I upgrated for you on the dresser, did you grab them?"
"I got them." Seto waved it off. "I'll be back in a couple of hours. Don't get into too much trouble while I'm gone."
"Yeah, yeah. Have fun." Mokuba mock-grumbled as he turned his attention back towards the computer. He could operate several of the Kaitou Ryuu's holographic distractions from here, some that even 'Niisama didn't know about.
He was torn between mixed emotions about his brother's sudden night hobby. It was dangerous and if 'Niisama got caught, that would mean the end to everything. Kaiba Corp, their being able to stay together, everything.
On the other hand, it was good to see 'Niisama relax and have fun for a change. It was nice to see him smiling again. Even if the reason for it was dangerous.
But then, that's why Mokuba was there watching out for him. No one, absolutely no one was going to catch -his- brother.
Seto paused in the door way, giving Mokuba a strange look. "Mokuba?"
"Yes, Niisama?" He chirped, making sure the cartoons he had on the screen as cover for what he was really doing were visable.
Seto paused, giving him a serious look for a moment, then shaking his head. "Nothing. Nevermind. I'll see you later."
"Okay." Mokuba smiled innocently --he'd practiced the look in the mirror for hours to make sure he got it right-- and then looked back at the screen again.
He waited with baited breath as his brother watched him for a few more heartbeats, then left. Mokuba let the breath his was holding out in a whoosh. He waited a few moments longer before switching screens over on the laptop.
Kaitou Ryuu's cape could turn into a hangglider, which was well and good, but sometimes the wind wasn't always where it should be.
With a few clicks of a button, he went back to adding small jets to the gliders scematics. You never knew when an extra burst of speed would come in handy.

Date: 2006-02-01 11:52 pm (UTC)Taking lessons from Yuugi, now is he? XD By the way, I would like to return the plunnie to you now. It won't leave me alone. In fact, I think it has reproduced. I'm not sure how closely your story follows the official storyline but here's my take on another part of it.
-----------
Yuugi watched his friend mull over their encounter with Kaitou Ryuu. Why did his best friend have to be dragged into the middle of an ages old feud? A voice in the back of his mind chimed, -Because the magician thinks that I’ve marked Jounouchi as one of my servants. That makes him fair game.-
Wirly, Yuugi replied, I know that Jounouchi does not like to be referred to as less than a person. I’ve seen how he reacts whenever Yaiba calls him a dog. Yuugi’s eyes narrowed. Just like Kaitou Ryuu did tonight. Does he want Jounouchi to figure out the truth?
-The magician never liked to play an easy game. It seems that aspect has not changed over the millennia.-
Really…? Maybe we need to lay out the ground rules? Yuugi asked, all innocence put aside.
Jounouchi trotted out of the bathroom after changing into a worn t-shirt and boxers- his regular sleep attire. He froze in the doorway as he caught Yuugi’s expression. “Say, Yuugi? Are you alright?”
Yuugi mustered up a smile. “I’m fine. I was just thinking.”
“Don’t strain anything,” Jounouchi said, cheekily. Yuugi threw a pillow at him in response as Jounouchi ducked out the door and ran downstairs for a late night snack.
-He wouldn’t follow them.-
Huh? Yuugi said, not following the train of thought.
-Laying out the ground rules wouldn’t work. They aren’t his rules.-
How about he keeps this…game between us or else we let Bakura know who took his ring and where to get it back?
-…….. You’re learning, aibou,- the spirit said, clearly impressed. Yuugi could hear the spirit grinning deviously as he added, –Or, if that fails, you could threaten him with a mop.-
Hey! That was only on one occasion! And I belive you were the one to actually start swinging the mop. You just left me to deal with the situtation in the middle of the swing, Yuugi said, indignatly.
-You’re too nice. I was trying to help you out. Oh, look, Jounouchi is back.-
We’ll finish this later, Yuugi said sternly to his snickering partner.
Jounouchi held a bowl with wasabi peas and a glass of milk tea in the other. Yuugi made a face. “That combination is going to give you nightmares.”
“Hasn’t yet.” Jounouchi sat down and began to eat. Despite his misgivings, Yuugi helped himself to a few of peas. A few moments of crunching went on as the duo consumed the peas. Jounouchi finished off his milk tea and put the glass down with a thunk. “Say…have you ever had one of those days where you can’t stop having internal discussions with yourself?”
Yuugi gave his friend a long wide-eyed look, then laughed, “Everyday. Jounouchi, every day.”

Date: 2006-02-02 12:05 am (UTC)Argh. Wanna write a scene with Bakura and Kaiba now (argh, have something about Kaiba's collecting the items to prevent the rise of the pharoah or something, but it's really a case of mis-read heiroglyphs but he doesn't know that and Bakura giving him the ring), but we really gotta run. *makes whinging noises*
((Huggles)) Write! Write! Have fun with this! Knock yourself out!!! *squeaks!*
Don't abandon me! ^_~

T_T I don't know if they will live without outside encouragement. The Bakura/Koizumi link is teasing me, though. Maybe something will come out of that.

Re: could not so kick my ass. nyah
Date: 2006-02-01 09:17 pm (UTC)Oh, that one... thought I sent you a draft? It's called "Shuffle" and is about 2/3 written-- just got to add a couple of scenes in and it'll be done. First it was going to be a couple of paragraphs long, and then it was going to be a page, and now it'll be about THREE pages... **sigh**
Why does everyone wanna kick my ass?
Date: 2006-02-01 09:39 pm (UTC)Yeah the thingie above is about three pages or 2000 words. >_< So much for a one shot. >P
And so far we've managed to NOT get 2 things in the mail. Our modem (we had to go out, buy one and get a refund) and our christmas prezzie from my folks. Still hasn't arrived. *sighs*
So it's reach can't be THAT good.

There's just so much potential for snark in YGO, it's kinda hard not to mock. Go addictions!!! XD

Date: 2007-11-13 02:31 am (UTC)b) the thread between you and ysa about you living in new zealand makes me want to heartmark madly. i think i am weird because i have this thing about tracing proof of progression after the fact...i would make a good contemporary historian....so long as i could study the information age and forward.... ♥

Date: 2009-01-30 12:48 am (UTC)I'm glad Jounochi thought of it, it was sooo obvious even if I didn't know! XD If he saw his eyes, then that would have been it man. But calling him a Pharaoh's dog is basically the same thing, only more funny and less sexy. Haha.
I was kind of confused at first what Jounochi was doing then when he realized, I realized, but it wasn't too confusing.
