Sean: What's that? Your penis is gone now?
MOrgan & Icka!: .....
Sean *strikes victory pose*: And the room fills with silence!!!
Icka: The fact that you said that to your MOTHER might have something to do with it!!!
MOrgan: Would I get paid more if I had one?

Hakuba/Kaito and in someway, incorporate a refridgerator magnet, a phone, and vase.

"Hold on, hold on..." Kaito pinned the phone to his ear with a shoulder. Pencil, pen, there had to be something around to write with. He found a highlighter in the drawer. Close enough. He uncapped the marker with his teeth, poising it over the sticky note pad. "Okay, go."

"Make sure Sa-chan gets this message." Mum said in his ear, then began rattling off information. Kaito gritted the cap between his teeth and wrote as quickly as he could, attempting to keep up with her prattling. "Got it?" Mum said brightly. ""Okay! See you later, darling! Ta!"

The phone went dead in his hand.

"... right." Kaito sighed, hanging up the phone and attempting to finish scribbling down what she had said. "Ugh." Saguru was out on a consultant errand with the local constabulary and Kaito still had to run to the market to get things for tonight's dinner.

Okay. Now to leave the note some where Saguru could find it when he first came in.

Mum was usually the one to take phone calls, and handed them the messages when they arrived at the door. He peeled off the note and stuck it on the flower vase next to the phone and wandered back to the kitchen.

They had sausages, pickles, bread... good for sandwiches. But they were out of eggs. He should get some.

Besides, the market was like the second best place to pick up on local gossip. Everyone went there almost everyday.

He heard a soft slide from the other room, like something had fallen.

Alarmed, he sneaked into the hall.

... the note had fallen off the vase.

He glanced around, scanning for possible intruders. Nothing.

Feeling foolish, he stuck the note back on the vase and turned to head back into the kitchen.

"I swear, if you weren't my brother Tom Little..." A teeny voice hissed. Kaito paused, looking around.

Not a thing. Kaito shook his head. He'd been spending too much time by himself in the big spooky house, he was starting to hear things. Next thing he knew, the antique elephant's foot umbrella holder was going to get up and start dancing.

Shrugging to himself, he walked back to the kitchen, checking out the contents of ice box again. He paused in front of the large white box. He could put the note on the fridge, there were a few magnets there.

He pulled one off in the shape of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. Wonder how Saguru got that one.

A rustle from the hallway again. He frowned and walked down the hallway again. The note had fallen again. Shrugging, he picked it up and attempted to stick it to the vas with the magnet. It didn't work. He stuck the note to the table with the magnet instead. The sticky on the notes wore off so fast sometimes, it was a pain in the butt.

He glanced at the note, realising that in his haste, he'd written it in both English and Japanese. Oops. Oh well. Saguru should be able to read it. He'd -heard- some of the conversations Saguru had with his parents, this was nothing.

Kaito walked back to the kitchen. What was he doing again?

Dinner. Right.

He heard the note slide across the floor again.

The hell?

He crept towards the wall as silently as a cat, senses straining for any thing that shouldn't be there. He couldn't -hear- anything, but now that he was looking for it, he could almost -sense- something else in the house. Something tiny.

Something squabbling.

"Get back here!" The voice he thought he'd heard before squeaked. "The Human Bean is going to be here any second!"

... Bean?

"Oh, relax Lucy Little." A second voice scoffed. "All we need is the petal and we can get back home."

Kaito peered around the corner. There were some small shapes on the hall table with tails waving behind them. If he squinted they looked like mice. But he wasn't squinting and instead they looked human like. Just.... very itty-bitty humans.

Miniature humans who were using the magnet as a step-stool in an attempt to climb up the flower vase. From the look of it, they were attempting to grab a rose petal that had fallen off and was balancing precariously on the lip of the vase.

The click of the lock in the front door being undone caused both him and the shadowy little guys to freeze. "Tadaima." Saguru's tired voice called out. The detective was home early.

Their little visitors quickly vanished, disappearing behind the phone.

Kaito straightened up from his crouch. "Okaeri." He called back, heading towards the door. He picked up the fallen note as he did so. Saguru was taking his coat off, hanging it on one of the coat pegs behind the door. "Here ya go." He quickly grabbed his coat, sticking the note on Saguru's forehead and quickly ducking out the door before the blond could say anything.

Little people, huh?

Looked like there was more than one thief in the Hakuba Household.

Well, that certainly explained where all his missing socks went....

-fin-

Lucy and Tom Little are from the series 80s cartoon series, 'The Borrowers', based off a series of books by Mary Norton.

Kaito: Hey, Saguru? Did you know that there are little people living in your house?
Saguru: Hmm... will have to put some milk on the window sill for them then.
Kaito: Huh?

There's a whole series of children's books (at least a dozen) called The Littles, written by John Peterson. They're very easy books for independent readers, about on par with Ruth Chew's books.

I own a couple of them and have them stored away for when my daughter's old enough to be interested. I'd say they lean heavily on Norton's The Borrowers (Norton's books are much more challenging reading and address more difficult ideas, but both series start from a similar premise, and I'm certain that Norton's books were published first), but they're not the same at all. I remember reading The Littles when I was in elementary school in the 70s, and I believe they weren't new then.

Of course, I'm now very curious about the TV series... It sounds like somebody mashed the two series together. Was the cartoon any good?

Thank you. Was writing 'The Littles' and thinking 'The Borrowers'. ~_~ Can't remember of the Borrowers had tails or not.

Same premise, little people who live in big people's houses and 'borrow' things from them, staying hidden from the Humans.

The Littles was done by DiC entertainment back in '83 and still occasionally shows on network TV ('wonderful world of DiC' or something)

Wondering now if I should change it all the way over to the Borrowers or all the way over to the Littles. >_

It's the Littles, if you're thinking tails. Runs around 7 AM on one of the local channels on Saturday mornings, possibly to punish those foolish enough to be awake at that time on a Saturday... ::never saw enough to make out the story, the animation quality caused her to tune away::

( I had a strange fondness for what had used to run in that time slot, a possibly-French show called 'Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century.' 'Twas, if nothing else, pretty, and that's all I ask for of anything I'm watching at 7 AM. )

Haha!! I seriously posted it with the firm belief no one would answer it.

So Icka wrote a little fic as part of a Yaoi series having to do with a fridge magnet, a phone, a vase and the Littles. Hm...my summary does sound a little bit wrong....

How on earth you think of these is beyong me. brilliant though

It started out as being a little drabble about Kaito trying to figure out where to put a phone message for Saguru, pinned under a vase or stuck to the fridge with a magnet, then some how little people got involved and just got bigger. ~_~ *glares at plunnies*

Some challenges we can answer. Some we can't. We -always- get plunnies for them, the question is if the plunnie is big enough to be a complete story instead of a passing thought.

Keep tossing challenges! You'll get some answers!!

*applauds* Another excellent piece of writing. Thoroughly enjoying to read. Bet Kaito's going to wonder about things when ever he gets back to Japan.
The itty bitty little grammaer Nazi inside me is screaming at Now to leave this some where because the 'this' stands along and doesn't say what 'this' is. Of course the note is implied but I've had english teachers ream out students on that.

Yeah, Kaito's definately gonna have his horizons broaded by the time he gets back... hee.
