They didn't know his face.
They didn't know his name.
When the news of Kira first hit the airwaves, it made him pause. Someone was out there, killing people. No, correction. Killing -criminals-.
The Kaitou Kid was a criminal. However, unlike the first targets by this mysterious 'Kira', the thief did not kill people.
But if someone could kill murders from a distance with a heart attack, who was to say that they weren't going to extend their range to other criminals, even 'petty', flamboyant ones.
So he laid low for a little while, joining the hundreds of people in trying to discover exactly who Kira was and what their motivations were.
For all everyone's efforts, Kira might have been, well, a phantom.
Eventually word did leak out that the mysterious detective 'L', who was supposed to be better than the Teenage Detectives of the East and West, had joined the police in hunting down the mysterious killer.
Shortly after it was discovered that Kira needed two things to kill a person. Their appearance and their name.
They didn't know his face.
They didn't know his name.
He was safe. He wasn't going to suddenly keel over dead in the middle of class.
Which was a great relief when he heard about it. There were several jewels he was interested in acquiring that he'd been holding off on until he knew he wasn't about to unexpectantly drop dead.
Then came the Second Kira.
Second Kira didn't NEED your name. All the second Kira needed to kill you was to see you.
-which completely blew his plans of aquiring anything in the near future all to hell. No one knew just how much of your face the Second Kira needed to see to kill you. And even if the shadows from his top hat and the monocle hid enough, the Second Kira had no problems in killing police officers to get what they wanted.
So even if he was safe, he wasn't about to risk the lives of the officers that chased him. He was rather fond of Nakamori-keibu, Hakuba and the rest of the Task Force, all things considered.
Then Second Kira announced that they were going to follow the First Kira's ideals and kill only criminals.
Which still wasn't exactly reassuring.
So he held off for a little while longer.
They didn't know his face.
They didn't know his name.
And he was going to make damn sure they didn't find out.
Then Kira, both the first and second, disappeared. Vanished off the face of the earth completely. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.
Perhaps they were bored. Perhaps the mysterious L had gotten them. Perhaps what had allow them to do their mysterious killings had killed them in return.
He breathed a sigh of relief and pulled out his plans again.
And then Kira resurfaced for a Third time.
Fortunately for his peace of mind and what could be considered his sanity, this Kira seemed only interested in the corporate world, caring not a wit for the criminal world.
He resumed his heists, keeping an eye out for any change in behaviour. But Kira's remained consistent for several months, so he slowly began to relax, enjoying the heists that were both bane and pleasure.
Then Kira's pattern broke, someone threatening to reveal who his existence was and a car chase that resulted in not only his identity being blown but his death as well.
Or so it appeared.
The killings started again, the First Kira was back on the move after that. They stopped showing criminal's faces on the air, but images still leaked out on the internet and things went back to the way they were during the height of the First Kira's wave.
People began to accept it as part of their daily lives, the crime rate dropping dramatically. Having an invisible uncontrollable hangman hovering over your head did that to society and the world at large.
He wished he could return to normal as well, pretend that he wasn't the mysterious Phantom Thief that he was, but he had a promise to fulfil and an evil organisation to thwart.
They didn't know his face.
They didn't know his name.
And as long as he didn't get caught, they wouldn't.

Date: 2005-08-02 04:47 am (UTC)Kaito snickered. He was a bit leery when we started reading Death Note. Was amusing having this chibi-Kaito freaking out going 'OMG!! They're gonna KILL me!!'

Date: 2005-08-01 04:49 pm (UTC)Though I'm not sure Kaitou's the kind of guy Light would go after anyway...the only theives he's gone after are violent robbers...usually he hits the murderers, the kidnappers, the rapists, etc.
(I'm sure L probably would actually know Kid's identity though. He knows EVERYTHING.)
