Well, good news and bad news.
Detective Conan has been re-named (copyright conflict with 'Conan') to "Case Closed".

Ran = Rachel Moore
Kogoro = Richard Moore
Shin'ichi = Jimmy Kudo
Teitan = Titan
Agasa and Conan remain the same.

'Neechan insists that 'Jimmy' comes from Jimmy Olsen from Superman.
*glasses on* "I'm Clark Kent/Edogawa Conan"
*glasses off* "I'm Superman!/Kudo Shin'ichi!"

First reaction: "Doooooooooom."
Second reaction: Moore? Like Benjamin Moore? The paint company?
Third reaction: OMIGOD!!! KOGORO'S BECOME A PORN STAR!!!

Anybody remember the first Robin? Richard Greyson? Remember what he was normally called?

Dick.

In Kogoro's case: Dick Moore. (Moore, Dick? Private Dick!!)

Case Closed. One Truth Prevails.

We have nothing further to say.

.......Jimmy Kudo.........?????

JIMMY?!!!?

Okay, okay, calm down now, **fans self** It could be worse. They could have picked an 'S' name, to sort of sound like Shinichi. He could be, um, Stuart Kudo, or Stevie Kudo, or Stan Kudo; yeah, those ARE worse than **shudder** 'Jimmie', aren't they?

Hmmm...... Rachael Moore?

Though I must admit, the title "Case Closed" does not entirely suck; kinda nice, actually. But "One Truth Prevails" sounds rather dorky, all in all.

Beyond this, I'm withholding judgement; but Icka? Just consider what they could make of Loki.......

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!

Why?
No, honestly. What is the "logic" used when deciding to change character names and do they use a phone book to do so? ::looks at names again and whimpers::

Would Jamaican work a lot better than funnily disguised English, I wonder.

Yet another reason why CN is blocked on my TV. (Bill, Bill and Bill being another.)

Note to self: Go DVD.

:P Bleargh!

Okay, this subject is enough to pull me out of lurking. One thing I might wonder about this: If they entirely change the name, won't that decrease the amount of "I-just-saw-the-series-and-I-think-I-can-write-better-than-you/the author/anyone" fanfiction?

If we get really lucky, newbies'll post crappy fiction under the american title, so DC isn't spammed with it.

*shrugs* We can hope, anyways.

Well... Case Closed, huh? I think that's the only part that didn't make me want to bang my head on the table. Funnily enough, the "One truth prevails" thing is reminiscent of the cheesy slogans DC already likes to throw around. How about that.

I can see the transition from Ran Mouri to Rachel Moore if I squint my eyes and pretend that only English-speaking-world-prevalent names exist in the world. And well, as for the nickname of Richard... it's what Kogoro unintentionally is on occasion anyhow. But Jimmy. Jimmy Kudo. That just about made me cry. What'll they do to my poor Heiji-kun and Hakuba?

Well, let's be faintly optimistic too. I got into Cardcaptor Sakura after I saw one episode of the dub, recoiled in horror, and looked up the real thing. There's still hope. We'll band together.

::deep seated SHOCK::

Jimmy?!

...Dick Moore?!!

........

...ohmyfscking GOD. ::cries:: WHY!?! And I was entertaining the thought of checking it out on TV... but... holy mother of god, I thought they'd just translate it, not make some cheap-ass parody of it! ::cries:: Those names are awful. I swear to god if fanfics with those names appear, I'm going to be so tempted to stab out my eyes with a plastic spork! >_

The names are bad enough as is..if they make Heiji Harry...*thinks Harry Potter and dies*

>.<

And Haunty brought up a good point. Can you imagine reading fanfics after it's released about Jimmy Kudo and his gang?

*whimpers again*

That is enough motivation for me to leave the DC fandom.

Forgive me, but I find this all far too amusing. Even more amusing than the Latino singer that looked like a young Mr. Bean who came to our school for CAPP. Kinda feels like laughing at the Devil -- you know you're doomed, but damned if you're going down quietly. No doubt there's going to be a LOT of rants about this on LJs in the years to come.

Titan Secondary! Highschool for the gods!

That's just...that's just...*screams* I'm terrified, I really am. And I realize it's just a name, but for me, names are everything.

Plus the fact that if anyone ever wrote something so OOC (for the Japanese version) I would kill. I really would. Although with the dubs, you never know. These could be in character.

Oddly enough, that was the most-likely scenario that Orla and I came up with too.

Of course, our worst case scenario was "Hank" (short for Henry of course).

Or they could go the Tomoyo/Madison route and pick something completely surreal like... Johnny... or Tori...

Jamaican would be nice...

Only I heard a rumour he would have a Southern accent...

*offers up sacrifices to the Gods* Please go with the Jamaican! It would be so much more appropriate to his character!

Could be worse, but then again, I'm already used to translated names...Chinese. Of course, those do come a great deal closer in most cases. Example?

Mouri Ran: MuoLi Lan
Kudo Shinichi: GongTung XinYi

Then there are the ones that go way off.
Hattori Heiji: PingCi FuBu

Somehow, I get the feeling that translation from Japanese to Chinese has more to do with the actual characters though. :P

Erm...which Chinese are you translating it to? I'm guessing Mandarin, since that doesn't look Cantonese.

Ran is MaoLi Lan and Shinichi is GongChen XinYi. Yes, I'm rather picky about Chinese spellings; forgive me.

Yeah, I always wondered about Hattori and Kazuha, but I think those were done based on lettering.

When they translate to Chinese, it's sometimes based on sound and sometimes based on lettering. Like Ran and Shinichi is based on letters, but they also happened to sound alike.

*sighs* They could have at least made it James instead of Jimmy!

Hattori Heiji: PingCi FuBu

Reversed name order. Should be Fu'bu Ping'ci.

Kazuha Toyama: Yuan'shan He'ye.

And also a correction on [livejournal.com profile] tinytinytina's comment:

When they translate to Chinese, it's sometimes based on sound and sometimes based on lettering. Like Ran and Shinichi is based on letters, but they also happened to sound alike.

For Japanese, as a race, their names are nearly in call cases translated into kanji names; if their names were in kanji already, okey, keep it (Of course the pronunciations would be different-- as in the case of all DC characters above.). Even the name is totally katakana, as soon as people recognize that s/he's a Japanese, their name would be transliterated into kanji, by considering what kanji would sound like that in Japanese. (examples: Kira YAMATO of Gundam Seed, or Hiroki SAWADA in DC Movie 6. The problem of how the latter was transliterated was mentioned here (http://www.edogawaconan.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1486&forum=3).)
