"Cased Closed - One Truth Prevails"
Feb. 5th, 2004 08:24 pmWell, good news and bad news.
Detective Conan has been re-named (copyright conflict with 'Conan') to "Case Closed".
Ran = Rachel Moore
Kogoro = Richard Moore
Shin'ichi = Jimmy Kudo
Teitan = Titan
Agasa and Conan remain the same.
'Neechan insists that 'Jimmy' comes from Jimmy Olsen from Superman.
*glasses on* "I'm Clark Kent/Edogawa Conan"
*glasses off* "I'm Superman!/Kudo Shin'ichi!"
First reaction: "Doooooooooom."
Second reaction: Moore? Like Benjamin Moore? The paint company?
Third reaction: OMIGOD!!! KOGORO'S BECOME A PORN STAR!!!
Anybody remember the first Robin? Richard Greyson? Remember what he was normally called?
Dick.
In Kogoro's case: Dick Moore. (Moore, Dick? Private Dick!!)
Case Closed. One Truth Prevails.
We have nothing further to say.

Date: 2004-02-09 10:34 am (UTC)Mouri Ran: MuoLi Lan
Kudo Shinichi: GongTung XinYi
Then there are the ones that go way off.
Hattori Heiji: PingCi FuBu
Somehow, I get the feeling that translation from Japanese to Chinese has more to do with the actual characters though. :P
Re:

Yeah, I always wondered about Hattori and Kazuha, but I think those were done based on lettering.
When they translate to Chinese, it's sometimes based on sound and sometimes based on lettering. Like Ran and Shinichi is based on letters, but they also happened to sound alike.
*sighs* They could have at least made it James instead of Jimmy!

Kazuha Toyama: Yuan'shan He'ye.
And also a correction on

For Japanese, as a race, their names are nearly in call cases translated into kanji names; if their names were in kanji already, okey, keep it (Of course the pronunciations would be different-- as in the case of all DC characters above.). Even the name is totally katakana, as soon as people recognize that s/he's a Japanese, their name would be transliterated into kanji, by considering what kanji would sound like that in Japanese. (examples: Kira YAMATO of Gundam Seed, or Hiroki SAWADA in DC Movie 6. The problem of how the latter was transliterated was mentioned here (http://www.edogawaconan.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1486&forum=3).)
