Fun with Costumes
May. 25th, 2003 08:08 pmToday was fun.
Rambled yesterday at the local anime shop employees about my Larva costume, so they asked me to bring it by some time.
I did. *smug grin*
Walked in wearing Larva, and no one noticed, so I started checking out the shelves. THEN people started to notice. *laughs* Found the Vampire Princess Miyu graphic novels about that time and walked up to the counter, holding it out and causing everyone to laugh. The whole thing was very fun, even got to chase a kid around the store.
The owner's mother-in-law was in from Osaka, and stopped to talk to me about the jade I wear. She liked it, telling me about the meanings of the different colours.
The walk there was amusing too, had Larva's frame hooked over one shoulder, so unless you were on the side I was on, all you saw was the hugeness that is Larva with all of his flowing robes. Had some kids shouting at me for about a block: "Hey Monster! Hey Monster! Come here Monster!"
Had even more fun walking into Home Depot with him, people freaking out as I'm trying to get PVC Piping joints for NoFace. -_- Had one guy follow me around the parking lot in a -really- muddy jeep (it looked cool!) to find out if 'it was real'. (yes, it's a real costume, whaddya mean 'is it real'? Real what?)
Was really thirsty after that (Larva is a HOT costume to wear, much less carry around), so stopped by the boba shop, and me in all of my ditzy glory forgot about him as I switched arms to grab my coin purse.
Scared the crap out of the poor girl at the cash register, she turns around, and there's Larva staring at her... Is prolly a good thing I'm a familiar face.
Frame is done for NoFace except for a funky 45degree angle that's giving me fits. Ended up having to re-draw the entire frame/skeleton 3 times today -_O My head hurts, not used to so much logic...
Larva's frame is 10" wide by 34" high, and the shoulders above my head are 24" long by 8" wide. (sorry, too fried to convert that into metric.. ). When I'm wearing him, he's about 6'10", a few inches shy of 7 feet tall. In other words, he just barely fits under a door frame.
Noface's frame is 12" wide and already equals about 39" high. Had originally measure the pipes to make the frame about 36" high, but forgot to compensate for the joints on the frame, which add another half to a full inch each joint. (about 4 joints per side) And due to the funky 45degree angle that's got to go from just under the cube on top to just above my shoulders to support his head, he's gonna end up a LOT taller. This is without making the dome on top of the frame. o_O
When I said I wanted to make NoFace large, hadn't quite meant this large! @_@
We're still in the process of carving his face out of a chunk of 5" thick foam. You need a really REALLY sharp blade to cut foam right. People keep telling me to use an x-acto blade.
¬_¬;;
An x-acto blade is -maybe- an inch long. That's like trying to cut neat little holes through something the height of your hand with something the size of the first joint of your pinkie finger.
-we picked up a box cutter with a biiiig blade, will see how that works.
And if all else fails, we picked up LOTS of black duct tape. ^__^
On the positive manga side, we picked up TokyoPop's translation of FAKE. (one of the big yaoi series) Didn't expect to like it, but ended up HIGHLY amused and very entertained.
Kind of reminded us of Petshop of Horrors, with the cops aspect and the dark haired guy hitting on the fairly clueless blond, and the kid bouncing around in the background.
Is a good thing we're mentally blah, or Kuroba and Saguru would prolly be pulling some of that stuff right about now... *Fang-Filled Grin*
