There are prolly a half dozen references to this story in already posted fics.
Because we have been working on this fic off and on since Febuary which means our POV of the characters has shifted since then, and actually, a great deal of it is because of this story.
So Neener Neener Neener.
... yeah, it's late...

It was Class 2-B's turn to put on a play for the school festival. They had chosen to do 'Sleeping Beauty'.

However, in a strange twist of chance that no one, including the class magician himself could explain, Kuroba Kaito's name got drawn to play the Princess.

And in a piqué of humour that probably had a lot to do with the fact that everyone in class had fallen prey to his pranks and sense of humour at least once, they decided that revenge was a dish best served in a dress. The vote was near-unanimous as they changed plays and cast him as the main character of Snow White. After all, he already had the doves.

Akako was drawn as the 'Prince', to which she did not object to, and in a reversal that had Kaito falling over in stitches laughing over, Aoko as the Wicked Sorceress.

Hakuba was the Huntsman, something that amused quietly amused him, seeing little change in his role. Catch the Kid, kill Princess Kaito, it was really all the same thing. Chasing Kuroba.

Keiko was cast as stage manager, and other roles quickly handed out. The people playing the trees in the scary forest looked especially pleased with their part, viewing it as a chance to play Ping-Pong with Kaito as the ball.

Things were going smoothly until they actually started reading the script.

"K-k-kiss?!" Aoko stammered, her eyes wide as her face approached a new shade of red as of yet un-heard of by man. "But y-you CAN'T kiss Kaito!"

"Why not?" Akako purred, looking much too smug at the prospect. "It's right here in the script."

"Yes... but..." The blue-eyed girl trailed off, uncertain as she struggled for the words. "You can't kiss KAITO!!! Kaito is Kaito and you -don't- kiss Kaito!"

It probably made some sort of twisted sense in her head, but it made absolutely no sense what so ever to anyone else.

Hakuba leaned towards Kaito, who was watching the proceedings with a vaguely puzzled but amused air. "Are you going to help her out?" The detective inquired.

Kaito leaned back, shaking his head. "If she can't figure it out herself, anything I say is just going to get me hit with a mop."

"Ah." Hakuba nodded. If he had to voluntarily give the thief credit for anything other than annoying the heck out of the police department, it would definitely be for his survival skills.

"Okay." Akako smirked, crossing her arms. "So do you want to kiss him then?"

"Bwah?" Aoko's face quickly left the 'crimson' stage and was threatening to turn supernova as she frantically waved her hands in the air. "No! No! I'm not gonna kiss Kaito, you're not gonna kiss Kaito, NOBODY is kissing KAITO!"

Kaito, meanwhile, tried very hard not to laugh at his best friend freaking out.

Hakuba lazily raised a hand in the air. "What if he wants to be kissed?" He drawled.

"Eh?" Hakuba's question had the effect of overloading Aoko's already confused mental processes, resulting in complete and utter brain shut down, leaving her standing there staring with a blank expression on her face.

"Let's practice the kissing scene!" Akako cheered, bouncing towards Kaito. Kaito let out a strangled 'Eep' and bolted from his chair, taking off running. Akako grinned and chased after him as Hakuba sat back in his chair and chuckled quietly to himself while Keiko started setting odds on who would finally kiss the magician.

After a few minutes of pandemonium, Aoko finally gave up on trying to get her brain to work and went to find her mop. Angry was better than confused after all.

The play rehearsals were chaotic, filled with miss-quoted lines, scenery falling, light cues missing, bets exchanged, disappearing props and general mind boggling confusion and insanity.

In other words, it went as perfectly normal as you can expect a play being run by a bunch of kids in High School. Or any other production for that matter.

Keiko was in high heaven. It had been a long time since one of the bets had been this active. Even people from other classrooms were taking delight in the goings on and placing bets of their own.

Kaito was having some fun as well. For once, he wasn't the one causing the chaos and he could sit back and enjoy it.

... most of the time anyway...

Aoko wasn't quite sure why everyone was suddenly interested in kissing Kaito, but she was going to do everything in her power to make sure that nobody did. She wasn't quite sure why she was so compelled to protect his 'virtue', but it was something that she felt deep down in her gut she had to do.

Which was really rather a shame, seeing as he was -supposed- to be kissed.

This continued to the Final Practice, in various forms.

"You... you... ARGH!" Aoko stalked out on to stage, blushing furiously and waving a finger at Kaito, who was being leered over by Akako. "You! Outta that coffin! Now!"

Kaito peeked open one eye from his resting place inside the decorated box that served as their coffin.. "But I'm supposed to be dead." He protested innocently.

"I'll show you dead!" She growled. He gulped as she suddenly charged at him, faster than he could scramble out of his coffin. Akako backed up as well, her eyes wide and amused.

"Aoko... WHOA!" She grabbed the arm he had stretched out in warding and used it to bodily haul him over her shoulder and began to stalk out of the room, Kaito hanging upside down so that his eye level was well below her waist line. His cheeks flushed red and he quickly glanced out at the rest of the class, looking much like a small confused puppy being sent to the corner for doing bad before they disappeared backstage.

Keiko quickly re-adjusted the odds in Aoko's favour.

Hakuba quickly turned and walked out the other door, shutting it behind him. But not before howls of laughter were heard echoing out of the usually sombre detective's mouth.

The bemused detective had a chance later to ask Kuroba about the incident later while backstage later, as Akako and Aoko got into one of there arguments. "How come you didn't protest?" Hakuba questioned as he casually leaned against the wall next to Kaito.

One of the Magician's eyebrows flickered upwards before he glanced away again. "I got distracted by the view." He deadpanned.

The detective barely covered a second laughing fit with a series of coughs.

No one was fooled.

Things were going perfectly smoothly as the production was finally performed in front of a live audience. The trees didn't use Kaito as a ping-pong ball too much, Akako toned down her cackling, Aoko turned out to be really good at it and Hakuba was as impassive as ever.

Over all, it was a charming play, mismatched genders of the main characters withstanding.

Up until they got to the kissing scene, which well over half the school was looking forward to, either having seen the fights, heard about it or had a bet placed.

Akako was bent over the coffin, her lips lowering towards his when, just like in all the practice runs, Aoko came storming out on stage.

"You can't kiss hi- The Princess!" The Evil Queen of the play shouted, catching herself in time. Bets began exchanging hands. How ever, this time she appeared to have stayed in character. "It won't work!"

The Prince raised back up. "Why not?"

"You're not the Princess' True Love!" Aoko stamped her foot proudly, pleased with herself to find a way out of the red-eyed girl kissing her best friend. "Ha!"

"I am too!"

"Are not!"

"Am too!"

As the girls argued on stage, Hakuba sighed, decided enough was enough. He walked over to Kaito, quickly kissed the stunned magician, then to the delight and surprise of the crowd, hauled him out of the coffin, threw him over his shoulder and walked off the stage, Kaito slack jawed in his grasp.

After all, he was a detective.

And a detective always got their man.

-fin-

And what you don't see is Akako shouting "Fine!" and doing the same for Aoko... ^^;;

This was our 'getting used to the idea of Hakuba and Kaito as an actual pairing' fic before we found out that people wouldn't freak at the idea. (quite the oppisite ^_^ )

The actual plunnie that started everything was Kaito dreaming that Akako and Aoko had announced that they were now dating and running off giggling, Akako's parting shot being that Kuroba was all Hakuba's now. And then Kaito waking up in a panic just as a grinning Hakuba wraps an arm around him in the dream.
Since then, Chibi-Kaito in our head has been torn between Hakuba and Aoko. Voices are still voting for Three-some, cause they think Hakuba/Aoko is a cute pairing too.

This story also brought about Keiko as a Bookie as well. She's been in the background ever since, taking bets. ^__^

Prolly my fault.
Unless I know that who ever is sending the message isn't spam, it tends to get deleted. ^^;; Get a lot of viruses sent to me and don't wanna take the risk of getting infected.
Sorry about that.
You can ask your question here too, if you'd like.
