Keroro Gunsou / Sgt Frog
Nov. 20th, 2011 12:11 amSo,
skyechan says to me, that if I'm not going to watch 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' with her and CarpetCrawler, I should watch Keroro Gunsou/Sgt Frog.
My introduction to the series was several yaoi douinshi with them all as humans, and this AMV at AnimeExpo 2005. It's Marilyn Manson screaming Beautiful People, to some of the more dramatic and disturbing shots of the anime.
.... I thought it was a serious series. So I tried the manga and couldn't get the 'Serious Invasion Series' idea to match up with 'Random Comedy' and didn't make it past a few chapters.
This time, walked into it knowing it was a comedy. Was bored the first couple of episodes, then suddenly.... There's this red guy. With a short temper. Blowing stuff up.
Long story short, am now hooked. It's like Invader Zim. Only with Frogs. And Fanservice.
Finished volumes 1-16 in about 3 days, and it's taken about the same amount of time to get through movies 1-5.
Giroro, the red one with the guns is hands down my favourite character. This has yet to be a surprise to anyone. Dororo's growing on me quite a bit a well, with his quiet mellow background zen.
Natsumi is one of my favourite characters in the manga. Absoultely adore her. She is the first and last line of defense when it comes to stopping the Alien Invaders that live in her house. Her best friend is a Ninja who can't quite adapt to 'normal' life. She still has normal worries about classes and getting chores done, and has a crush on 623 on the radio. She's taking care of her little brother, and holding together a household that includes aliens who are both her friends and enemies at the same time and doing a remarkable job at it.
In the anime, she kinda annoys me.
I get that the anime is aimed at a much lower age group (which is why the panty and topless shots disappeared after book 7), but it seems like they took away a lot of her compentancy away in exchange for complaining.
Saburo is another one of the characters I don't like the change from manga to anime. He's a mysterious re-occuring character, like Kid in Conan, making his appearances interesting. Kinda like to think of him as one of those 'consperacy' characters, he's off hunting MiBs, doing his own thing and making you wonder where he gets his funds if he's dropped out of high school. He's got a fabulous magic pen that brings his drawing/writing to life and makes up bad poetry on the fly.
And him with the creepy Kururu is a riot.
In the manga, Natsumi's addicted to his weekly radio show and got a bit of a crush on his radio persona. When they meet, her reaction tends to be 'Hey! It's the cute guy! Let's go kick butt together!'
In the anime, Natsumi's brain melts down and she simpers at him for a moment or two befKeore remembering what she was doing. And he shows up frequently. It's just not as cool.
Keroro and Fuyuki crack me up, they're just like siblings. In many ways, I think having Keroro in his life has made Fuyuki blossom, he's not as overshadowed by his super-athletic sister. Although I do find it interesting that they keep saying that he's an occult/supernatural otaku who is definately not psychic, but he does have the occasional accurate prophetic dream and near mystical connection to an alien frog.
Giroro and Keroro amuse me as well. Almost all of the invaders refer to each other by rank, except these two, because they grew up together with Dororo (who is too polite to call someone by a casual name). And if Keroro isn't around, it's 'Giroro and the others', Giroro the unspoken second in command.
But the way they act is a bit like how Giroro's older brother, Garuru, acts around Giroro. Keroro is the annoying little brother who just happens to be the boss and Giroro has to pull his fat out of the fire. (or at least try to, and die trying in the attempt).
It seems to me that Natsumi reacts much the same way, that Keroro is another little brother to take care of, only much much MUCH more troublesome.
Do like Koyuki, just don't have much to say about her or her partner Dororo. Indifferent on Tamama and Momoka, although their split personalities are occasionally amusing. Momoka's butler, Paul, is amazing. And Kururu reminds me greatly of Watari from Yami no Matsuei. Evil Geniuses of the World, Unite!
-Pairing wise, after catching this AMV of Giroro and Natsumi kicking butt that first night watching the series, am totally shipping them. ^^;;
There will be fic. It will be Skye-chan's fault. ^__________^
Completely unrelated,
wren_chan requested that I pimp a joint project between herself and
ocianne, Manga Scans of the first two chapters of Magic Kaito Volume 3.
Star Wars is avaliable as a zip here.
