Trying out Google's Chrome instead of my constant companion, Firefox. My laptop is approaching a decade of life and doesn't have the resources for memory heavy programs, which Firefox has become. Firefox 3.whatever freezes the computer to the point of crashing.

After waiting 20 min for Firefox 2.5 to start up last night, I said frag it and downloaded Chrome. Been told by friends it's faster and loads better.

Which I do have to give it massive props for. It opens up and loads like a dream, even on my antique.

It's pretty much intuitive, the learning curve on it has been really easy, although the search bar and url bar being combined has taken a little bit of mental adjusting.

And once I upgraded to the beta thread and added AdThwart, seeing about as many ads as I did on Firefox with AdBlock and CustomiseGoogle. Not many at all. Another plus.

There are themes as well, so you can play with the colours, add art and stuff, but I haven't played with that much, other than getting rid of the default blue.

The one downside I'm uncertain as to if it's the program and which are my old lady laptop.
Loading.
Occasionally it will decide that after working quickly and fluidly for several hours, it cannot load a page. It cannot load the previous page or any others. Hitting 'Stop' and 'Reload', or 'Stop' and 'Back' does nothing.
This will cascade into it cannot load any tabs at all and require a re-start of the program. The more tabs I have open (usually a 3-4), the more likely this is to happen.

It also appears to only want to load which ever tab is open. If you switch to a second tab, it doesn't want to load in the first tab and sits there and spins.

-Which is a slight problem for me, because after years of dial-up, I got used to surfing in multiple tabs, so I could read in one while another loads. One tab surfing does NOT work.

But honestly, compared to locking up the entire computer for untold lengths of time, this is a minor inconvenience.

So Google Chrome: So far so good.

Hi Icka! *waves*

Maybe the works-for-hours-then-won't-work problem is a cache thing? Can you change the settings so it doesn't store as much?

Yeah I really enjoy chrome... (s'neaar impossible to go back... and I love moving tabs all over the place)

dunno about the loading thing... mine usually loads when i open several although I do know that chrome has been eating up my virtual memory like gluttony or something- But like you said... compared to what happened when I was using firefox (as much as I loved it in the early days) it's not really as big a problem as it could be.

Welcome to the darkside ^_^

Chrome is nice and shiny. :) My only complaint is that I can't format or paste the way I want I lj with it (which is why I'm using Firefox). I've be dually informed if you want to do banking, you have to use IE but for everything else, Chrome is good.

I've never had problems with tabs in Chrome. However, I've switched back to Firefox. Chrome, astonishingly, lacks print preview, which is a must for me; its Print Selection never works either even though it's an option. Also, I really missed the search engines on Firefox.

Tabs not wanting to load is a problem I've had on both my deceased laptop and now my dying desktop. Sometimes the wheel just spins and spins.

My trick? Refresh. If it doesn't start loading within a second or two, I'm hitting refresh until it does, which usually only is once or twice.

Never had all five tabs go at once though...unless my modem was down.
