Re-watched 'The Sunset Mansion' case a few days ago for a line for PYP, and it spawned more plot bunnies.

This was spawned by the mental pic of Kuroba accusing that Hakuba would start dancing the Hokey Pokey in celebration if he ever caught the Kid.

Hakuba slammed his book bag on his bedroom desk with more force than necessary and scowled darkly at it. Stupid Kuroba. Damn him anyway, it was -his- fault in the first place. That no-brained, low-class bungler of an idiot! If he had had a shovel at the time, he would have knocked the other boy out then buried him with it!

He was a Detective. And as such, he thrived on challenges. The challenge of pitting your intellect against the opponents, the thrill of pursuit, the bittersweet taste of victory and the acidic taste of defeat.

He and Kuroba had had a verbal sparring match after school at excessively loud volumes, both of them pushing each other's buttons in an effort to get the other to -react-. He had been hoping to force Kuroba to let something slip, and Kuroba taking fiendishly un-holy delight in causing him to react to 'something other than that stick up his butt twitching'.

Things had gotten interesting when the subject of the Phantom Thief had been brought to the fore, and for a while it had appeared that he had won the confrontation.

Then Kuroba had asked -that- question.

"So what ARE you going to do if you ever catch Kid the Phantom Thief?" He challenged, his dark blue eyes almost appearing to glow Kaitou purple in the light.

His response hadn't even required thought. "Move on to a greater challenge, of course."

Kuroba had actually had the audacity to grin then, his face narrowing in a smirk. "I thought the Kid was the greatest challenge around to you detectives."

And he'd had no response.

He still had no response.

Kuroba was correct. The fact of the matter was that the Kid -was- the biggest challenge to anyone with the slightest inkling of detective sense. Just the mere mention of his name had most detectives, inspectors and policemen salivating at the thought of the chase.

If he caught the illusive Kid, there wasn't a greater challenge past that currently. No one had topped the Kid in games, skills, pranks or thefts in 20 years, and it was unlikely that anyone was going to do so in the foreseeable future.

The world without the Kid seemed very grey indeed. Chasing murders around like a rabid lawyer after an ambulance like the famous teenage taneti Kudo Shin'ichi didn't appeal to him either.

On the other hand, it was his -job- to catch the Kid.

It was a catch twenty-two.

He craved the challenge the Kid presented.

If he caught the Kid, there would be no more challenge.

His morals wouldn't let him not catch the Kid.

He sighed, running a hand through his hair and making it stand on end for a moment before smoothing it back out.

This would have been a lot simpler before he gotten to know Kuroba.

... part of this was accidently posted on 'friends' view a few days ago. Sorry about that, had actually hit 'private' because we didn't have a floppy at the time, and LJ kinda went wonky.

Lazulisong: I can't find the website where we orginally found the Hakuba with the Kid against the wall pic, but I think we have it saved on our drives... ^^;; will have to check.

Well....

we both know what I think he would do. ;P

I'll call you tonight and find out how you're doing. Had a nasty weekend. Apparently people are VERY unhappy when they find out I am NOT going to be paying for everything anymore.
