Today was a day full of firsts.

First time ever dipping my foot in the Mississippi. Just the left foot, not the one with the zombie nail.
... Mississippi mud is squishy. And oozy.

Tried gator for the first time too, down at Boutin's. Was nice, just watching the water go by and feeding the turtles. ^__^

One of the things I've noticed is the amount of Fleur de Lys motif there are around here. Texas has a lot of stars or stars in circles as decoration all over the place. Here it's Fleur de Lys.
Asked someone about it, and evidently while it's always been the symbol of New Orleans (Which is pronounced as one word), since Katrina, it's become the 'Symbol of Hope' And Rebuilding.

Just kinda interesting.

Anyway, early morning tomorrow. *yawns* Hope everyone's doing well. ^_^

Glad to hear that my state's treating you well.

Most people around here associate fleur de lis with Louisiana/New Orleans because the fleur de lis was a very French Thing so lots of French immigrants brought it with them to NO. And even when the Spanish took over for a quick spell, the French influence was still around.

Boutin's is the awesome. So much good food in such a fun place. I actually still have family in Baton Rouge. My Cousin was in charge of mosquito abatement for the city for a time. I do believe he and Jill still live in the same house down by the river. They usually ended up with crayfish mounds in their yards. One of the reasons crayfish are called "mud bugs" they live in the mud.
As for the Fleur de Lys, you are in the Louisiana Purchase territory now. It used to all belong to the French. Hence the Fluer, heraldic Iris, and a symbol of France which used to own it all.
Texas has the star. It is the Lone Star state. During its history it has been claimed by 6 different countries including as its own country and as part of the confederacy. Hence "6 flags over Texas." It retains the right to secede from the union in its constitution, and the right to fly its flag at the same height as the US flag. just about every other state must fly their flag lower. It is a "Republic" by definition in its constitution.

The Holiday "Juneteenth" (http://www.ask.com/bar?q=When+Did+Texas+Become+a+State&page=1&qsrc=6&ab=2&u=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FTexas) is still celebrated in the states that were part of the Confederacy. It is the Day the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. June 19th. Sadly our schools no longer teach important dates like that.

I understand the name of the town is properly pronounced "Nawlins." Haven't been there but my folks have spent quite a bit of time and have grand stories to tell. They correspond regularly with their friend "Turk," who owns a pet alligator named "Fifi."

For the curious...

[livejournal.com profile] visc_lore's pretty close; it's sort of a 'nahwrlns' sound, with very little existing of the last syllable other than consonants. As for the fleur de lis, my grandmama always called it a 'french lily', so that makes sense.

If you get the chance, try some Crawfish Etoufee; it beats jumbalaia all hollow. Also, I know you're fond of Evil Eye beads too; there's a particular one you'll find in that region with (I'm not sure why) *three* eyes on a single bead, usually done by glass applique. Might want to keep an eye (heh) out for one, you won't find them anywhere else in the world so far as I know.
