I want a what-if -- blame this on kawaii chibi!Kaito at the end of file 573...

...what if, on one of her visits to her old teacher, Yukiko brought chibi!Shinichi & Shinichi and Kaito met then? (One would expect them to be rather fast friends if they met at that age.) Friendship, not romance, please.

And maybe a bit of breaking of detectives' (and kaitou's) brains, because that's really lots of fun!

Kaito reached out, grabbing his new friend's nose. Shin'ichi was the son of one of his father's two students and an okay guy to be around as far as Kaito was concerned. He was a bit on the serious side about everything except for Soccer, which he got all bouncy about. "Got your nose." Kaito grinned, pulling his hand away.

"You do not." Shin'ichi frowned, his eyes crossing as he attempted to look at his nose.

"How do you know?" Kaito shot back, wiggling the little bit of flesh sticking out between his fingers.

"That's your thumb between your fingers, idiot." Shin'ichi declared. "My nose is still on my face."

Kaito grinned back. "I didn't get your -real- nose." He countered. "I got your noses -energy-. And without this-" He waved his clenched fist "-you can't smell."

"I can too." Shin'ichi shot back. Kaito used his free hand to pull a flower out of mid air and wave it in front of Shin'ichi's face. Shin'ichi's stubborn look faded as he realised that no, he couldn't smell anything from the flower. "Gimme back my nose!"

"Make me!" Kaito cheered, sticking his tongue out at the boy as he ran off. Shin'ichi shouted as he chased after him, chasing him all over the green grassy area of the park. Shin'ichi was fast, but Kaito was faster. Unfortunately, Shin'ichi could run longer than he could and eventually caught Kaito, sending both of them tumbling head over heels across the grass.

Kaito laughed, giving back Shin'ichi back his nose before he could get his face rubbed in the mud. Shin'ichi would too. He waved another flower, this one scented, under Shin'ichi's nose to prove that he had his sense of smell back.

Shin'ichi rolled off of them and they watched the clouds for a while, Kaito picking out shapes as Shin'ichi explained how clouds were formed and atmospheric conditions could change their shapes. Shin'ichi was smart and knew what he was talking about and could explain it in a way that didn't make Kaito feel stupid when he didn't get some of the larger words, so Kaito didn't mind the lesson. He knew stuff Shin'ichi didn't, so it worked out both ways.

Conversation shifted and Shin'ichi started talking about Ran. Ran who was his best friend and the most important person in the world. Who could kick his butt in Karate and helped him solve mysteries.

Kaito was privately jealous of Shin'ichi for having a Ran and decided that he wanted one of his own. A better one than Shin'ichi's Ran, someone who liked his magic tricks and could keep up with him, wasn't afraid of monsters and who would protect him from f... fi... fish. The next flower he gave someone, he decided, he was going to give to to his own Ran.

Then Shin'ichi's pretty blond Mom showed up and took them back to Kaito's home, but the thought of a Ran of his own remained on Kaito's mind.

A few weeks later, he met Aoko.

Yes, it does.

Shouldn't do it myself, since about the closest I get to a plot bunny for it is the image of Hakuba discovering that Shinichi Kudo and Kaito Kuroba are best friends.
