Family
An Ouran Host Club Fanfic
By Icka! M. Chif

Haruhi never knew what to expect every time she opened the door to the unused third music room. Some days it could be a tropical paradise, a lost civilisation or a Japanese tea party. Other days it could be an Arctic expedition or a journey to the bottom of the sea.

Today however, it was silent. There were no rose pedals swirling out of the doorway, no shouts of welcome. For a moment she hesitated, glancing up at the sign to verify that she was at the correct room. Which she was.

"Haruhi!" Hikaru and Kaoru appeared out of no where, picking her up by the arms and carrying her off before she could even form a protest.

"There you are!"

"Come with us."

"Am I..." She glanced at the twins, realising with a slight sickening feeling that their expressions were more grim than usual. "I'm not late, am I?"

"You're just in time." They assured her in chorus just before pushing her through a curtain. "There are clothes in there."

"Hurry up and change-"

"-We'll do your hair."

"Eh?" The curtain swished shut, leaving her alone in the changing room, with a soft, very feminine looking sundress. Feeling slightly railroaded, she quickly did as instructed. She didn't think any of the Host Club would peek on her while changing, but the twins seemed impatient enough to open the curtain before she was completely changed.

"Done." She called, stepping out of the room. Hikaru and Kaoru were on her before she'd finished putting her foot down, Kaoru placing barrettes in her hair while Hikaru carefully applied something that smelled of apricots to with his pinky finger to her lips.

"Haru-chan! Haru-chan!" Honey came running up, Usa-chan flapping in his arms. Mori followed more sedately, carefully carrying a tea tray with two steaming cups and a couple of slices of what looked like cheesecake on it. "We got espresso and a yummy cake!"

"Excellent." As if summoned from the shadows, Kyouya appeared. "Right this way."

Kyouya lead the way, Mori bringing up the rear with the tray while Hikaru, Kaoru and Honey all tugged her along. It might have almost been comical if it hadn't been for the sombre aura around them. It was unusual to see any of the Host Club being anything less than their usual friendly selves. For all of them to be so grim cowed her a little bit. Not much, but enough that she did not argue the man handling.

"Here we are." Honey announced as Mori handed her the tray, being cautious that she had the weight of the tray before he released it. "Good luck!"

"Huh?" She barely had time to blink before she was pushed through another curtain. Haruhi stumbled a few steps, the weight of the tray making things awkward before she was able to catch her balance and straighten up.

Tamaki was standing next to one of the large windows the dominated the walls of the building. It was a westward facing room, the light of the near setting sun turning the room a dusky blue.

Haruhi had seen Tamaki in many moods, the blond was the most expressive person she knew, not a single thought or emotion was not shown on his face. She thought that she had seen him depressed before, curled up in a corner with storm clouds hovering over him, but she'd never seen him like this before.

Tamaki -hurt-. It was etched into every line of his body, from the curve in his posture posture to the dullness in his eyes.

"Sempai?" Haruhi called softly. When he didn't respond, she tried a second time, stepping closer. "Sempai?"

Tamaki startled, looking up at her. "Ah. Haruhi. I'm sorry, I didn't hear you come in."

"It's all right." She assured him, setting the tray down on a convenient table next to the sofa that over looked the window. Tamaki looked almost haunted, seeing her without seeing her. He hadn't even appeared to notice the dress. Concerned, she picked up the saucers with their cups of espresso and walked over next to Tamaki, silently handing him one.

He took the cup, staring into its depths as if he might find an answer there. Haruhi gently took his elbow, guiding him away from the window and steered him towards the sofa. "Come sit down, Tamaki-sempai."

He did as he was instructed, moving like a marionette as she got him to sit down, all without spilling their steaming drinks. Tamaki continued to stare listlessly out the window, just holding the cup as if to warm his hands.

Haruhi sat silently, cradling her own cup, uncertain as of what to say. The sky outside darkened, the clouds gaining a golden tinge to them.

"The others are worried about you." She finally commented. That was the one obviously thing.

Tamaki didn't say anything for a long moment, then let out a shaky breath. "Ah." He shifted slightly, as if the breath had been what was holding him up, his shoulder leaning against her, his hair covering his face.

"Tamaki-sempai?" She questioned. When he didn't say anything for a moment, she reached over and took the cup and saucer from his hand, placing it and her own on the tray.

She wasn't used to offering physical contact. Her father was the affectionate person, she was used to putting up with it. Tamaki wasn't family, but he was her friend and he was there when she needed help. She reached out, feeling awkward as she patted his arm.

He shuddered, resting more weight on her, his head resting on her shoulder. "Tamaki-sempai?" She questioned.

Tamaki let out a mumbled reply in French, then switched to Japanese. "Mère is in the hospital." He said softly.

He was Half, she remembered. His mother was a french business woman, he had lived with her until a few years ago when he'd moved here on his Grandmother's wishes to become heir to the Souh family.

Japan was a long way from France. Haruhi leaned her head against his golden hair, wrapping an arm around his head in a half hug. "I'm sorry." She whispered.

Tamaki nodded back and she could tell that he was trying hard not to cry. After a moment's thought, she guided him down until his head was resting in her lap. Tamaki stiffed slightly under her touch. "Haruhi?" He whispered, as if afraid of taking too much of a liberty.

She hummed a small melody in return, idly running her hands through his hair, like when she helped her father work out a particularly hard knot in his long hair. After a moment, he relaxed, moving so that he was stretched out on the couch, using her lap for a pillow.

Haruhi watched the sky change from blue to gold, remembering her own mother doing this for her when she was younger and scared, tired or confused. Her father had done this for her after her mother died as well, once or twice, but he was more of the hugging type than the quiet petting time.

She missed her mother.

Haruhi was startled out of her thoughts by Kyouya, putting a soft blanket over Tamaki and was surprised to realise that the Host Club president was fast asleep, his hands clutching the fabric of her dress like he was afraid she'd leave.

"Thank you." Kyouya said softly, but none the less gratefully. "I keep track on how his mother is doing, but he's not allowed to contact her and I'm afraid sometimes it does more harm than good."

"Tono can't help but to help." Hikaru and Kaoru whispered, taking a seat on the floor next to her, Hikaru leaning slightly against her legs.

"He doesn't like to see people hurt-"

"-Even if it means he's the one who ends up hurt."

"That's how he met us." Gold eyes stared unblinking at her.

"We had to stop picking on girls-"

"-If he could tell us apart."

Hikaru slung an arm around Kaoru, Kaoru wrapping his arm around Hikaru's waist. "Which he did."

"Tama-chan returned Usa-chan to me." Honey nodded, squeezing in between her and the arm rest, the bunny almost taking up as much room as the small senior. "He told me it was okay to act like myself."

Mori nodded, taking a seat on the floor as well, Honey's legs sticking out over Mori's shoulders.

Kyouya chuckled, pushing up his glasses as he rested his elbows on the back of the sofa. "Tamaki decided I needed a friend and wouldn't give up." He admitted. Haruhi blinked in surprise, Kyouya didn't like giving away his secrets.

"That's why we followed him here." Kaoru agreed, giving her a reassuring grin and releasing his twin long enough to tug on her ankle.

"To the Host Club."

"Tama-chan is our friend." Honey agreed.

"Oh." Haruhi blinked, finally understanding what was it that made them work. Tamaki had found them all one by one, gathered them up and pulled them into the sun, turning them into a family. Tamaki was the Father, Kyouya was the Mother, Hikaru and Kaoru were the sons, she was the daughter and Honey and Mori were the cousins.

They were strong by themselves, out casts really, but brought together, they were something more. They were the Host Club.

She smiled down at the sleeping boy in her lap. "Aa." She agreed. "He's my friend too."

Mère - French for 'Mother'

Information thanks to Enigmatical, a wonderful Tamaki shrine.

Upon watching the previews for episode 9, made the startling discovery that my hair colour is the same as Haruhi's Dads.

Crossplay... 8D DO IT AND TAKE PICTURES!!!

That was awfully sweet. And I'm pretty sure Tamaki took a LOT of potshots at trying to guess which twin was who but I can't remember the results, really.

Seconding [livejournal.com profile] fuskugyoku about Kouya = Kyouya or Kyoya. Then there's Suoh which you -always- mistype. :D;

That just was one hell of a nice fic. Good mood throughout the whole thing... and only made better by Tamaki's not even *mentioning* that she was dressed as a girl. Good indication of his state of mind, really.

**siiiiiigh** You gave me a link the other night to where scanlations are posted. Could you please send it again? I'm buying the damned volumes (got 1 & 2 right now) but I am currently broker than broke and would like to see what happens in #3. Pretty please with a chocolate-covered weasle on top?
