Baseball References in Yaiba chapter 44
Apr. 29th, 2006 12:22 pmGosho LOVES his baseball. Seriously loves his baseball. And his historic characters. Take Yoban Saato for example.
It also pops up in Detective Conan from time to time. But I think he played more freely with it before he started doing DC.
So. Yaiba. After several years of being stuck translated at chapter 36 at Toriyama World, Manga-Koekje picked it up. For two chapters. And then apparently dropped it. So now EMS Manga is translating it, and getting it out pretty quickly. Only 19 more volumes to go! Gambatte!!!
So, baseball references for Yaiba file 44...

Sayaka's Dad: Yesterday it was Kuwata, so today it should be Makihara...
Masumi Kuwata: Pitcher. Number one draft pic for the Giants in 1985. MVP in 1994, was just retired this year.
Hiromi "Mr. Perfect" Makihara: Pitcher. Number 1 draft pick by the Yomiuri Giants in 1982. One of the few people to ever pitch a 'Perfect Game' (no hits). Retired in 2001.
Sayaka *with a 'Hara 8' banner*: I wonder if Hara-san will bat today!♥
Tatsunori Hara: MVP in 1993. Worked as a baseball commentator from 1993-96, was most recently Skipper for the Giants. Hit over 20 homeruns a season for about 12 years straight.
Musashi to Kagetora: So you're a Tigers...
Kagetora *wearing a Hanshin Tigers hat*: Garu!♥
Okay... this had me rolling. Hanshin Tigers fans are known for being increadably rabid fans, ready and willing to fight over their team. And jumping into rivers when they win a game.
They haven't won the Japan Series since 1985, due to the Curse of the Colonel.
Their stadium is also where Koshien is held and is known for being a sacred stadium.
... fans of Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE may also recgonise them from 'The Hanshin Republic', the first strange country Yuuko drops everyone at, where they meet Sorata and Arashi from X/1999.
When we left Osaka during my Japan trip in 2004, I made sure I didn't leave before getting a Hanshin Tigers keychain. #^^#

Yaiba: "Uwa-! What a Big Egg!"
'The Big Egg' was the original nickname for the Tokyo Dome when it was built in 1988. Not used so much anymore.
Page 11, next panel: Yomiuri Giants vs Onix. (spelled 'oni', as in 'demon' + 'x')
That's a take off of 'Orix', formerly the 'Orix Bluewave' baseball team and currently known as the 'Orix Buffaloes'.

-I can't find anything for this. Sorry.
Page 13: Big Earred Announcer is Suguru Egawa. Star pitcher from 1979-87, twice led the league in wins and won three consecutive strikeout titles from 1980-82. Commentates for the Giants as well hosts a nightly sports program.
Nicknames for him while pitching included 'Dirty', 'Enemy of the People' and 'The Giant Devil'.
Page 16: "Okada Hits!"
Akinobu Okada: Former player for the Hanshin Tigers, played for the Orix in 1994.
Page 17, last panel:
Yaiba: "Beat them up! Kuroma Tengu!"
Sayaka: "It's Chromartie"
Actually you're both wrong, it's 'Cromartie'.
Warren Cromartie: An American player who joined the Yomiuri Giants in 1983, played with them until about 1991.
... and those are the references we caught. #^^# If you're into Yaiba and reading it, I hope that helps! XD
