Why we like...
May. 2nd, 2003 10:40 pmThere's some speculation currently if Hikago is well and truly over, and if so, -why-. If this is the end, it's rather abrupt. Like 'they had 2 days to end the series before it went to print' type abrupt. o_O Usually even for a vacation or what not, you get a couple of weeks advance.
But the whole controversy about it got me thinking about why I like certain series.
Meitantei Conan: The hole we fell into over a year ago and haven't been able to climb out of since. #^^#
Genre: Mystery (usually murder)
Got into it because: of a fanfic by K.C. Hulsman, seeing it around the Japanese bookstores.
While in RL corpses kinda squick me out, finding them in Conan just cracks me up like you wouldn't believe. The sub-plots and interactions with the characters are great, but the art style does take some getting used to. One of those series that makes you think.
Magic Kaitou and the characters there are our favourite. Heiji's second, but we can't quite seem to write him much.
Yu-Gi-Oh! (subbed/manga, NOT the English Version)
Genre: Games
Got into it because: Saw in Japan fall of 2000, found a fanfic by Talya Firedancer shortly after.
*falls over giggling* This is one of the few series that has me bouncing around hyper actively and laughing like a loon. The chains, metal studs and leather pants are also highly amusing.
But it's the psychological stuff that keeps us coming back for more.
See, it's not a duel between Yami Malik and Yami Bakura on top of a blimp in the Shadow Relam.
Malik, while holding a phallic symbol, is arguing with his split personality who is currently residing in Bakura's body. Meanwhile, Bakura is dealing with his own split personality while trading quips with someone else's split personality who technically isn't even there while they're standing in a place that isn't quite of this world all the while throwing illusions at each other.
See? Sounds like a bad drug trip, the hallucinogenic fog included. Freud would have a field day.
And everyone wants Kaiba. Poor Seto.
Spiral ~ Suiri no Kizuna ~
Genre: Mind fack. Okay, mystery.
Got into it because: Was introduced to the fansubs. Yay fansubs.
Pretty pretty pretty. And funny. Once again, we've got the dead bodies (see Conan), but we've also got the HUGE mystery of just what the heck the Blade Children are and what do they want with the main character? And where does the newsgirl get those hand puppets?
The mind games that are played between the various characters are what keep me coming back for more. Really like the one line by the main character after he just got a bomb off of his neck that he never wanted to do that again. I don't blame him.
Hikaru no Go
Genre: Games
Got into it because: ... actually, I don't remember. Think it had something to do with boredom and the fact that Sai is a ghost. ^^;;
One of our favourite comments about it is that Hikaru is squishy. Which is true. You just want to hug him.
The downside to this is that the older that he gets, the more Hikaru reminds us of our youngest brother. So we adopted him as a younger sibling that we keep an eye on. ^^;; Akira's our favourite character though, want to get him on a sugar high sometime. Heh.
Inuyasha was at the top of this list for a long time, but we drifted out of it about the time the anime reached Japan, and several annoying newbies have completely destroyed most of our liking for the series now. It's something that I've heard about happening to other writers, but never thought it would happen to me. >{
Gestomaden Saiyuki and Yami no Matsuei: Also pretty pretty. But it's not about the pretty angsty bishies. You can keep them. It's ALLLLLL about the youkai, bakemono and the monsters they fight. *Beams!* Got into it because Neechan likes them. The Hell-Hound from YnM and un-Diadem Gokuu are faves.
Any CLAMP series are M's fault. Once we got past the 'It's shoujou *wince*' reaction, having fun drooling over the art. Not enough monsters tho.
Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok: Conan meets Chibi Count Cain. Saw the first episode in Japan, picked up the manga. ^^;; Also falls under 'pretty pretty' but with mysteries, ghosts and comedy as well.
King of Bandit Jing: Sort of an impulse buy in Mandarake. The art reminds me of 'Nightmare Before Christmas' meets the Trigun Manga. Still, a cool read, even if it does get the 'girl of the adventure' thing going. However, Kir (a crow) seems more interested in the girls than Jing... heh.
Rockman/RockmanX: Got into it by stumbling upon a comic strip called 'Bob and George' one day. No clue how. Been snickering over the fics since then.
Twin Signal: Read a Megaman crossover fic with this series, was curious and found the OVAs for $10 at a con. Still trying to collect the manga.
Cyborg Solder 009: Love the opening theme. Saw lots and lots of sites for it while looking for Japanese Conan sites and figured why not, we'd give it a try. Retro 70s art style on the anime, but fun characters.
Astroboy: Lots of stuff for this around during the last trip to Tokyo, started to get curious. Then we saw the first episode on TV of the new anime series. Yeah, we're hooked.
