Anyway, jheen and clover_magic have done a Kaito/Shin'ichi ship_manifesto *squeee*
Which inspired me to sign up and have been accepted to do the Hakuba/Kaito pairing. #^^#

So... obvious question. Why does everyone like the Hakuba/Kaito pairing? Or not like the pairing as the case may be. ^^;

In that case I don't like the Kaito Hakuba pairing because it doesn't involve Shinnichi. ^_^

Matter of fact, one of my favourite Conan djs involves Kaitou and Hakuba in this bizarre contest to one-up the other by making Shinnichi like them more (at least as far as my poor Japanese skills allows me to work out). But yes, am sorry and will stop cluttering up this thread with non Hakuba/Kaitou related mutterings. (I'm one of the crowd that likes them when you write them -- you convinced me to go out and scour book off for the kaitou kid manga).

Does this mean we're busted? >_>;;; <_<;;; (Actually, I do kind of like it besides the fact you write it, but not as much as the other one. ...mainly because I can't really explain why I like Hakuba/Kaito besides they look good together, are sort of rivals, friendly/nice taunt/banter, fun, etc. ::mournful::snuzzzz::)

(What the... I wrote a bit more, but LJ ate it? Ah well... I also like Hakuba+Kaito by itself after you introduced the idea to me though. I can't really explain why, which is probably why I ship Kaito+Shinichi more since I can actually explain myself. Sort of.

I guess Hakuba+Kaito mainly looks good together, but also they have a rivalry going [although not as intense as Shinichi+Kaito in my humble opinion; the intelligence range is not quite up to par so Kaito isn't seriously challenged/threatened by Hakuba]. The difference is that they're also a more "fun" pairing, rather than "sharp passion." They have less contrast to bring out the ship, but at the same time, they're also consequently more friendly and light in competition, banter, and feeling. Also Hakuba is less "raw" than Shinichi and more "lovable" in a softened, clueless (less angsty?) way. ...er, does that make sense? Less aggressive involved, so the ship is more slow... more sweet. And it does work. ...urm. Yes. Luff! ♥)

Oh man, to count the ways!
Like you've said before, they're a straight man/comic act. I think they both have something the other needs. Kaito sometimes needs to be more serious, and Hakuaba needs to relax more, they're good for each other that way. I like Odd Couple stories. Hakuba is more well spoken and gentlemanly while Kaito is the life of the party and more of a normal kid.

And I think that Kaito has to have someone who 'knows' (Ok, this is barely even fanon, let alone canon) besides Jii. Someone he can be himself with without guarding everything. Kaito needs his own Heiji (^_^) I'd say Akako would fit the bill too, but she's a bit too scary, controlling men as means to world domination and all. They both have masks they wear professionally, and in Kaito's case socially. I think that there is a dominance issue with the two of them...but that it can always go either way. I think Hakuba has a need to control, but he also has to have someone he's able to surrender to, and I think that The Kid is someone strong enough to do that. Likewise the Detective is someone strong enough to take Kaito on his own terms without Kaito manipulating the situation.

They both keep up with each other mentally too, which is hard for either of them to find. Aoko just plain doesn't have the brains that Kaito has. This would work for Shinichi/Kaito too except that I get an Old World vibe from H&K which I don't get from Shinichi. Shin/Conan has proved that he's willing to go to ANY lengths to catch a criminal, even if it means trying to knock them out with a dart WHILE they are saving you. Both Kaito and Hakuba have their own code of honor that they adhere to, whether it's sending notices before stealing something, or giving someone you know is a thief information.

This leads me to the fact that I also like Rivalry stories. And I think Hakuba is Kaito's rival in a way Conan isn't. Conan's greatest rival is the Black Ops. He mostly deals in murder, robbery really doesn't even register with him. Kaito's also going against the Ops, but he's not trying to take them down, he's just trying to find and destroy the gem. He has no designs on the organization. And I think for Hakuba Kaito is his greatest mystery because he can't figure out the "WHY" which is very important to him. Hakuba wants to understand, which I think is one of the things that makes him into a more sympathetic character.

I believe that a was reading some of your stories, once, and a bit sad that there was no Black&White pairings. But, yeah, now I know there is ^.^;

That´s something else that got me into the pairing. Kaitou Kid is some sort of "Gentleman Thief", while Hakuba (for all his little quirks) pretty much seems to be a gentleman as well.
For some reason I really can imagine them, sitting in some Gentlemen´s club in fifty years time, having witty dialogues over port and sherry... Two people who - although they might not be on the same side - have some respect for each other (OK, the respect part doesn´t really show in the series, but then they are only seventeen and still pretty hormonal) and just enjoy talking to someone on their level of intelligence.

I also think a relationship between them could work, because they have some rules they stick to. Kid announces his heists, Hakuba does his best to figure out what the thief is going to do. Kid shows up, Hakuba tries to get him. Kid escapes and Hakuba - after some grumbling - decides to try again next time. At the end of the day there are not really a lot of hard feelings between those two. And most importantly: Nobody gets hurt badly.

Shinichi is Kid´s equal, but unlike Hakuba, death really does seem to follow him (as you have pointed out so well). That means that the usual "Kid-rules" don´t apply to Shinichi.
Heists that Hakuba attends are mostly a contest of wits between an intelligent thief and an equally intelligent detective. Heists that Shinichi attends mostly get bloody and violent very quickly.

I think a KidxShinichi pairing wouldn´t work out, because this kind of experience works in both directions.
I don´t believe that Kid could be happy with someone who attracts violence like other people attract mosquitoes and I also don´t believe that Shinichi could really trust the thief completely. Because Shinichi gets to see the worst of people, the worst they can do to each other, I believe that in his heart he will always see any criminal as "bad".

Hakuba doesn´t have those problems: He seldomly seems to be involved in murder and he grew up (or at least lived) in a country that has had some "nice", heroic thieves in it´s time (for example Robin Hood and Sir Francis Drake, who was considered a thief by the Spanish after all).

I can see him having a relationship with a thief without too many twinges of concience, because - unlike Shinichi who tends to put everything into black and white, right and wrong - Hakuba knows that there are different graduations of "being bad" and "being good".

Just realized last night that I've done fanart of Hakuba/Kuroba that was kind of slashy without realizing it.
In example: my Kaito Icon comes from a pic I doodled while writing a (no couple) Magic Kaito fic. It was accompanied by quite a few other doodles, which, in retrospect, are slashy-ish.
I don't recall whether I had started reading SoG at the time or not, so hard to judge your influence... Only thing I can say is your fics made me realize more openly that I did like the couple.
Why?
I guess it has to do with the other choices:
-Aoko is the canon coupling, she's sweet and lovable, and -Normal- (Ran may look alike, but she's just too perfect a person compared to Aoko). What makes her a great person to put Kaito with is that she can be his anchor to normalcy (mop wielding put aside.) Problem is, she and Kaito have been childhood friends since they were little, and, however much I like Canon, I can imagine very well the two considering themselves more like siblings, which would bring along a feeling of incest(?). Also, she kind of lacks the depth of personnality to be able to relate to Kaito's Kid identity. (IMHO) Love her loads though ^_^
-Akako is one of the only people I've seen in the manga make Hakuba blush. They make an interesting couple, what with Voodoo Queen and Science Nerd side of things. She fixates on Kid though, and I really have trouble picturing Those Two together. Kaito shows no interest whatsoever, they don't see magic the same way, and Akako is more like a spoilt child wanting her own way in her conquest of him... Don't have much against Hakuba-Koizumi though ô_ô hummm...
-Shinichi is more or less a stranger to Kaito... Not part of the series really ^^; They're great work opponents, but I think they couldn't stand each other in real life... ^^;

-aaaand Hakuba. Hakuba is one of the very few who really tries to understand Kid/Kaito. He knows his secret but (like Akako) has no real proof (that hasn't been nullified). He's also one of the very few to always be one step behind him. Like others have said, he's more open to considering him as a human being (the why? question) and they look good together -^^-
And, compared to Aoko and Akako, he's probably the person who can relate best to his Kid side (Akako, although having a second identity Class Top Model//Witch, is dismissed because of who she considers Kaito.) Hakuba has to be adaptable due to his dual nationality and frequent trips abroad. He is snarky and slightly 'posh' kid, but I guess it's as much his 'british' side as a defence. He's different and he knows it, like Kaito. And of course there's the healthy competition between them. Both are proud idiots sometimes. ^^;; Only problem is the fact his dad's an important cop, and he has his values of law, and Kaito is not likely to stop stealing that easily. The black ops are a point that can bring them together, fighting the bigger evil, I guess.
