[fic] DC AU: The Family
Jun. 9th, 2005 09:00 amIn which we take canon, twist it and turn it on it's ear.
"My God..." She breathed, looking at the screen in horror. What a fool she'd been, trusting these people blindly. She'd just run from the arms of evil right back into it.
And what was worse, she had -trusted- him.
The door shut behind her and she flinched, hearing the bolt click into place, locking her in the room. "Finally figured it out, did you?" A soft voice asked behind her.
Cold dread seized her heart, freeing her from fear and allowing her to compose her face. She was going to die. She knew too much now, both about the Black Organization and this group. There was no way around it.
"Took me long enough." She agreed, turning to face the intruder into her inner sanctum. "Should I call you Moriarty? He is your favourite character."
He slowly walked towards her, a smile that was not at all childlike on the child's face. "The Crown Prince of Crime, huh? Fitting, I suppose."
"For the son of a Crime Syndicate." She agreed. "I never would have guessed, you being such a fervent detective and all."
"Best place to hide." The glasses came off, tucked into a shirt pocket. His eyes were sharper, piercing, like this, without the lenses to soften them. "In plain sight. Also puts me in place to take care of the opposition."
"By putting them in jail. It's hard to be of use behind bars."
"Exactly." He paused in his approach, head tilting to one side. "You can relax, my side of the family doesn't deal in assassination."
Oddly enough, that did nothing to reassure her. There were worse things than death and she knew some of them. "And your side deals with?"
"Information."
Made sense. Why else would his parents travel as often as they did, and in disguise too? With their skills and reputation, information brokering or spying would be a snap. Even if they were found in the wrong area, it could be dismissed as research for a new book.
"Of course if you are interested in the other side, we could call my cousin Yohji." He continued blithely. "He's a master of wires and garrotte. Or cousin Himiko. You'd like her. Her nickname is 'Lady Poison'."
"Pass." She'd take life, such as it was, for as long as she could. Life meant chances for better opportunities.
"Mm. Smart idea." He agreed, continuing walking towards her. "I do have to thank you. The Black Organization has been a pain in the Family's side for years now. They're bad for business and thanks to you, not only did their attempt on my life fail, but we're getting close to shutting them down."
"You're welcome." She said dryly, trying not to shrink back in her chair. She was in her computer chair, she should have been taller than him in it but even for someone of their shrunken statue, he seemed to -loom-. "And Agasa-hakase? He knows about this too?"
"Of course." He dismissed it casually, the betrayal of someone she'd actually come to care for. "He's been a retainer of the Family for years. How do you think he could afford such a house? He'd never made this kind of money on the children's toy market."
It was true. Agasa's toys never made it to market, yet the things he made for them always seemed to work...
She swallowed, he was -right- there, next to her. "Oh."
"That answer your questions?" He asked, almost politely, looking at her intently.
"Almost." Her voice wavered, almost cracking on the word. She was trembling now, looking at death with an unexpected and familiar face.
"Mm. Right. The remaining question is..." Kudo reached out, fingers running along her jaw, cupping Ai's face in his hands in a parody of affection. "...what are we going to do with you now?"

Voices say no. ^^;;
But then they're also insisting that their appearance at Tropical Land was planned as a set up to bop him over the head and poison him, so what do I know? o_O
