Shades of Grey Update

'Shades of Grey' is officially a year and a day old today, having been started on 22 April 2004, coming off of last year's Japan trip.

That said, it's been one hell of a fic and one hell of a year. Even if we were in denial over writing the fic for the first 25 chapters or so. To record, it stands as our largest fic ever, with 43 chapters and over 10 side fics equalling around 480k straight text or over 540k html.

It's probably also the fic that has caused us the most amount of emotional see-sawing. 1: It's a rare pairing. 2: It's a boy/boy pairing, even if nothing massive happens. 3: It's not short and it's not comedy, a blow to my mental self-image. 4: We really really did not want to get flamed. The Detective Conan/Magic Kaito fandom is predominately straight. How many ShinRan fics are out there? We were pretty much figuring on being run out with pitchforks if the fic ever became public.

...Which, obviously, didn't happen. *boggles* We're still in shock over that. o_o

However, the Fic That Would Not Die decided to throw us for a loop on Wednesday night, deciding to end it in a depressingly typical anime fashion, by picking up the pace and dipping into the angst side of the force.

So, um. It's over. Ta-da. The end.

Yeah, I'm as surprised as you are. But the guys decided to do what Shinigami, Vampyre, PYP or any of our other fics didn't. Actually take down the Ops. Through information, no less. No real big climatic fight scene, but by being as sneaky as the people they're hunting. And then retreating like hell.

There maybe other fics in the SoG universe in the future (they're laughing at me as I type that), but the story is over. We will finish 'Holidaze' and 'Three Tantei and a Kaitou', but as usual, it'll be on their schedule, not mine.

Massive Thanks to the Prat Brigade: Po'e Nui, Dogmatix, MOrgan and Ysabet for acting as insperation, sounding boards and cheering squad. To the Evil Influences, Kaitou Ann for her B&W fics that gave us the courage to start the fic and to Mel Redcap for demanding more snogging. To Acechan, Jeva-chan, Summer Cloud and to the finicky Grammer People who won't let us be lazy about our writing. Thanks you guys.

So good luck to the boys, best wishes to the girls -whom we're not quite certain what they're up to- and a fine bottle of scotch to Nakamori-keibu, who's due for a nice long vacation now that his favourite thief is out of the country.

... and I have no idea what we're going to work on next... o_O

I know! I know! **Ysabet hops up and down excitedly** A SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd love to see KK trying to teach Hakuba some of his dirty tricks; and I would dearly, DEARLY love to see Hakuba having to attempt a heist himself for whatever reason. Talk about being on the other end of the pointy stick.....

I'm just never satisfied, am I? But it was such a GOOD storyline.

On one hand I want to kill you because SoG ended...

...On the other hand, I want to hug you because to are so deliciously evil to end it like that.

I hate when a good series ends, but I love trying to write "What happened next"s.

I was poking at Icka today about this, and suggested that maybe somebody ought to threaten his family or something; that's the only thing I could think of that would make him become a thief (you know, "Steal Such-and-Such or your father will pay!"). And KK already knows something about investigative techniques; Hakuba, on the other hand, does not have any thieving expertise so far at all. **makes chibi!eyes in Icka's general direction** Iiiiiiiiicka?

Except that they're both guys, and as such I can see Hakuba pulling a heist for an incredibly stupid reason like a bet, or Kaito daring him to. And Hakuba would know he's being stupid, and wouldn't be able to stop himself.

Hakuba: I can't believe I agreed to this! Why don't we just play stip-poker or something nice and safe instead?

Kaito: Do you really want to play a card game with me?

Hakuba: Good point. Darnnit!

Why, YES! We do! And we know you'll have LOTS of fun with it. Besides, does anybody *really* think that Hakuba's stupid enough to get into a betting game with Kaito that he KNOWS he won't win? ...unless losing means he finally gets to use the orange marmalade, that is.
