Good News: I have a job. Is just a temp one for the month of May, working as a receptionist. Their first question was asking how well I dealt with long periods of time with nothing to do. *whistles innocently*

Bad News: See [livejournal.com profile] ysabet's LJ.
My recomendation? Chocolates are good, so are pics and fics.

Good News: Filed taxes and due to the fact that I made under $2,000(US) last year, I get money back. Hee hee hee. Not much, but it's something. ^___^

Fic takes place after 'Three Tantei and a Kaitou'. Thanks to Po'e Nui for the name.

There was something about the pre-heist that was addictive. The energy, the sense of anticipation, the feeling of tenseness that followed everywhere, like hounds before a fox hunt. They knew their prey was close, they merely had to wait until the prey was spotted before they could let slip their leases and run.

It drove some Task Force members insane, the waiting, the sense of not knowing what was going to happen. There was only one constant on a Kid heist - expect the unexpected. Kid didn't harm anyone as a general rule, but one never knew if the person standing next to you was really whom you thought it was or the Kid in disguise. The constant face pulling never helped the strain either.

Nakamori-keibu was strutting his stuff, stalking around the case that held tonight's heist, barking commands, finalizing everything, making sure everything was in order. It was a small case tonight, 'Small' translating to 'no media coverage'. A small crowd of die-hard fans shouted outside, managing to track the thief's latest shenanigans. Hakuba occasionally wondered who was it that leaked the information to the fan clubs, there was no other way he could figure people would know otherwise.

"It's amazing what following the Task Force reveals." A casual voice spoke in his ear. Hakuba startled, jerking around to see Kuroba standing next to him, hands in his pockets as he observed the on goings serenely. Hakuba hadn't been aware he'd made that observation out loud. "Keep tabs on a couple of people and you always know when a heist is going on."

"Really." He couldn't really seem to get much more than that past his throat. Kuroba. Kid heist. Kuroba at a Kid Heist. There was an oxymoron, or at the very least a conflict of interest there. Kuroba smiled at him, wiggling his fingers in greeting.

"Kuroba-kun!" Nakamori-keibu greeted Kuroba with grin.

"Yo, Keibu!" Kuroba grinned back, completely at ease. "Thanks for letting me watch tonight."

"Not a problem. Maybe you can give us some assistance as to his 'magic' capabilities." Nakamori's grin grew slightly fiendish as he grabbed Kuroba's cheeks and pinched, stretching the skin.

"Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!!!" Kuroba yelped in pain, arms flailing frantically. Nakamori finally let go, a satisfied look on his face. Kuroba rubbed his sore red cheeks, tears pricking in the corners of his eyes. "Iteitetetetete..."

"Glad you could join us!" Nakamori gave the distracted teen a hearty slap on the back, sending Kuroba stumbling a step, all grins again. "Hakuba, keep yourself useful and keep him out of trouble, will you?"

"Of course, sir." Hakuba was going to keep a VERY close eye on Kuroba. Pity he couldn't handcuff him to himself this time. He noticed Nakamori giving him a suspicious look and backed up a step, arms up in warding gesture. "I've already passed the face test, sir." Twice tonight, in fact.

Nakamori huffed, but walked off.

"Man..." Kuroba rubbed his face. "You go through that -every- time?"

"Every heist." He acknowledged. Sometimes a few times a night, especially if people were shifting around. Hazards of duty and all that rot. "What brings you here tonight?"

Kuroba grinned and Hakuba would be damned if it wasn't the Kid's grin coming through Kuroba's pleasant mask. "Just enjoying a change of pace. Never really seen a heist from this viewpoint before. Usually it's from... an outsider's perspective."

Understatement.

The sound of glass breaking distracted him, an officer shouting in the background that Kid was in the building. Skylight, most likely. Kuroba smiled, hands resting in his pants pockets. "Oh, goodie. The show's starting." He commented with mild interest. One might have almost expected him to pull out a bag of popcorn to munch on next from his tone.

Hakuba glanced at him, almost missing the smoke explosion around the heist. Officers scrambled, heading towards the pink cloud as fluttering shadows escaped back towards the ceiling, the Kid's laugh echoing. Hakuba held his handkerchief over his face, one arm fanning the smoke away from his face. It didn't smell like the sleeping gas at least. He noticed Kuroba had pulled his shirt over the lower half of his face, coughing and beating the fumes away as well.

Shouts came from outside, the crying going up that the Kid had escaped and was flying away. Officers poured out, Nakamori leading the charge. The smoke dissipated, leaving the room abandoned, only a few officers remaining behind to stare at the leaving cloud with shell-shocked expressions. Task Force Veterans mostly, realising that the chase was most likely futile and deciding to focus on the clean up instead.

"Blimp or Hang glider?" He called, making his way towards the still upright case, Kuroba silently shadowing him.

"Hang glider." One of the officers, positioned next to the door called back. "Heading east."

With the breeze then. Most likely would loose Nakamori towards the mountains. Hakuba examined the case, noticing the remains of a capsule on the inside and what looked to be a timing device.

Or a remote controlled device. He looked up at the window that had been broken. He frowned and slipped out his left contact, closing the right to focus. A black wire was hanging from the frame, a bit of clear material hanging from hit. There was a small bump on the frame, nothing he could see clearly, even without the lenses that made him short-sighted.

He sighed, putting the contact back in and blinking a few times to restore moisture over the eye. As he did, something white next to the case drew his attention. It was a feather. Kneeling down, he peered at it, recognising it as a dove's feather, such as the kind they might lose during a startled and sudden takeoff.

Remote controlled devices and doves. Kuroba standing next to him the entire heist. He'd be willing to bet the hang glider was on a remote as well, with a propeller attached to the back to make it fly.

Hakuba glanced up at Kuroba, who was looking at him with interest. "Find anything?" Kuroba questioned.

"Nothing interesting." He dismissed it, rising and brushing off knees of his trousers. Kid had probably stolen the heist earlier, staging this for Nakamori's sake.

Or to establish a clear alibi. This was the third time Kid had stolen something either in Kuroba's presence, or when he had clearly been elsewhere. Kudo and Hattori were still keeping tabs on them after all.

"Shall we go?" He wouldn't learn anything further remaining here. The only person with the answers to any further questions he had was standing in front of him.

Kuroba shrugged back, looking indifferent.

He motioned for Kuroba to proceed to the door, Kuroba nodding in return, the two of them companionably falling instep as they walked towards the exit.

He supposed that he -should- feel morally obligated to be pointing and shouting 'He's the Kid!! It's the Kaitou Kid!!' and drawing all sorts of attention to his companion.

On the other hand, he had no proof what so ever that this was the case. Certainly he knew that Kuroba was the Kid and vice versa, but he was still in the same position he had been a year and a half ago. Knowing and lacking the evidence. The major difference being that the knowledge no longer rankled as it once had. He was comfortable with it now.

Perhaps he was no longer quite the shining white champion of justice he had once thought he was. But then, Kid wasn't exactly a deep dark villain of evil either. "Did you enjoy the heist?" He questioned politely, waving farewell to a few officers who tiredly waved back.

"Eh." Kuroba shrugged in return, hands back in his pockets as was customary for him. "Kind of anticlimactic, really."

"Yeah." He agreed. Simple, where everyone had been expecting complex. He shrugged, rolling his shoulders a bit as he relaxed, mentally setting the case aside for tonight as a bust. Let Nakamori figure this one out in his own time.

"Care to get something for dinner? My treat."

Kuroba grinned back at him, friendlily bumping into Hakuba's arm with a shoulder. "Sounds good."

Hakuba grinned and bumped back, causing Kuroba to chuckle in return.

Then again, perhaps the night wasn't a total bust after all.

Love the fic per usual. Congrats on the job, glad to hear about it. =)

I'm sorry to hear about Ysabet. ^^;;; Er, I echo the rest, be good to her? :O Pettings rule. ...I don't suppose you'd know what sort of fanart would cheer her up? Although I'd need refs if I'm not familiar with the series. ^^; ::snomps:: ♥

This one ROCKS. And I don't believe I've ever seen anybody write a fic where the main character gets to critique his own performance and comes up with "kind of anticlimactic, really". **dies**

...I sound a lil' stupid talking so flippantly like that but anyway... congrats on the job too. :)

Congrats on the job and the taxes! My job starts in June... Drowning little kids as a swim teacher. And if I had made 30 more dollars last year, my father would have been very sad (since he wouldn't have been able to declare me as a dependant).

Heh. I agree; Kuroba being at a Kid heist IS and oxymoron.

I just love it! Kaito innocently standing there while the jewel is stolen. I'm still waiting for Hakuba to see Kaito and Shinichi together and assume that THAT'S how Kaito does it. *Snickers*
