Sometimes Hakuba wondered if Kuroba-watching should be a card carrying spectator sport. Like football, only minus the nudity, body paint and the screaming that the Americans applied to what they called their strange version of the hands-free game.

He watched the magician as a matter of course. Kuroba was the Kid. He just still did not have any proof for it. Therefore, he watched Kuroba to slip up to supply proof that he was the Kid.

Other classmates watched him as well. Not obtrusively, just subtly, but Kuroba's existence hovered in many's awareness. Aoko watched him because he was her seat mate, his self-appointed guardian and best friend.

Koizumi watched him... for her own reasons that he was inclined not to inquire too deeply about.

The rest of the classmates watched him out of a sense of self preservation and for entertainment's sake. The later of which Kuroba supplied quite cheerfully.

Take right now for instance. Kuroba, out of all the things to suddenly 'pull out of thin air' had made a Rubik’s cube appear.

Which he then proceeded to twist, turn, spin and manipulate until he solved it, all six sides of the cube showing solid colours instead of the usual mismatched riot of coloured squares.

All of which took the magician's agile hands about twenty seconds.

Kuroba, as if to prove that it wasn't a fluke, then proceeded to pull a second Rubik’s cube out of no where and do it again.

And a third, fourth, fifth and sixth cube out of mid-air until he had them lined up in a neat little row on his desk.

The magician paused then, examining the cubes and lining them up just so, making certain that a different colour was displayed along the top part. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and White.

Apparently pleased with the cubes, Kuroba picked up the first two and began to toss them into the air in a small circle. A third one quickly joined the two flying cubes, then the fourth, fifth and finally the last one so that all six cubes were flying in circles in the air.

Faster and faster the cubes flew until they were nothing more than a technicolour blur.

Then as suddenly as he had started, Kuroba stopped, quickly catching the cubes and setting them down on his desk.

Only where there had been six cubes with six different coloured sides, now there were six solidly coloured cubes.

One completely red cube, one orange, one yellow, one green, one blue and one white cube.

Kuroba examined the cubes with a smug satisfied grin on his face, picking each one up by turn and examining it before setting it back on his desk.

"Cute." Hakuba commented softly, leaning forward so that the magician could hear him. "But how are you going to change them -back-?"

-fin-

Thanks to Po’e for letting me type this up in the chat window.

The plunnie for this is due to watching a high school student on the bus do exactly what was just described, minus the juggling.
He had a Rubik’s cube that he'd solve, pause about a half second, then proceed to re-arrange it and solve it again. Took him about a minute to run the full gambit.
Entertained about half the bus in the process. ^___^

Holy shamoley. O_O Isn't the solving of a Rubik's cube some sort of indication of your intelligence? And that kid solved them in a minute? O_O Wooow...

:D Hee! My, that was adorable! I always love the little moments like these in ficcage, and yours are no exception. <3

Well, I know a guy that solved it that quickly but I know for a fact that he got directions off the internet and then practiced and practiced over and over until he knew what patterns to use to get a certain block elsewhere on the stupid thing. >.<

Utterly amusing. Loved how Kaito just goes about this like it's personally normal. Heh. And Hakuba's line at the end...priceless. Makes you do wonder if it was a one-time trick. ^.^"

The guy on the bus commented that he had a friend who taught him the patterns how to solve it like that. -and that compared to his friend, he was slow. @_@;; But according to him, once you know how to solve it, it's easy. Course, he also said he did it as a bit of a nervous habit, just so that he had something to do with his hands.

The thing that was fastinating about watching him do it was that he also played the paino... Long fingered, very limber hands and they just flew over the puzzle. Great fun to watch. (okay, yes, I like watching people's hands... )

The best hands ever...

And the cube had better not be a sign of intelligence because I'm going to feel badly about myself now!

But great fic, as usual. :) I'm so glad to fall into the habit of reading MK/DC fics again. *sighs* It's been too long.

There's no shame in watching people's hands, Icka...I do it all the time. (Though that may or may not explain the strange looks people give me.)

That aside, long, thin hands are what the fandom has given Kaito, isn't it? Or is it officially canon? I know his hands aren't quite something out of an El Greco painting, but, still...

Yeah, think it's what the fandom has given him... for a lot of magic tricks and what not, you need really flexible, limber hands. (my younger brothers used to do magic tricks, the longer fingers made it easier for card tricks)

I'm a people watcher in general, but people's hands are more expressive than they realise. Kinda like watching someone's eyes, they give away alot more than people know.
-one good reason to carry a sketchbook around, if people realise that you're an artist-type person, they tend to give you more lee-way as far as watching.
Something about the sterotype of artists looking at the world differently. ^^;;

*nods* My cousin's an amateur magician in his free time, and he's always expressing jealousy over my brother's long, thin hands.

Artists have it lucky; they can observe people and not look like they're nuts or a psycho, or whatever. Me, as just a writer and naught else, cannot observe couples in the park or children playing on the street without appearing like a serial killer, paedophile, or a homicidal sex offender. *sigh* The disparity in the Art world.

Icka, this may seem random, but you should do a comment-counter! They're fun to do, really, and it's nice to see who's been giving you feedback the whole time. The one I used recently is here. Just a thought; I did it and I found my best friend was 6th of 11. ^^;;

Heh. I'm nothing but a writer and I'm able to just sit someplace, minding my own business when people sit next to me, ignoring me, and talk about their personal problems to their friends. O.o' Kind of weird. It's almost like I'm invisible and it helps create problems for my characters...

...all this talk of long fingers make me hate my short, stubby ones...*sighs* They look like kiddy hands, really. *stares at hands*

*chuckles*
I've got the oppisite problem, my hands have all these little wrinkles on them, like an old ladies. ^^;; But they've been like that all my life, even when I was real little.

Being invisiable can be lots of fun. Can also be hazardous when people don't see you and sit on ya... had that happen before too.
But yeah, being an 'artist' does give you some freedom to watch and observe that other people don't have. When I was in Japan, i did sketches instead of photographs and would have people come up to me and explain what ever it was I was drawing, which they wouldn't have if I just took photos. Pretty cool.

-hmm... have you ever tried bringing a note book with you when you observed? People will often watch people back who write poetry or songs, I've seen that...

I did try that, actually. Someone called the cops; they thought I was writing down hits. O_o I think it's because I'm Indian, and it was right after 9/11. Still, I'm a bit off-put by taking a notebook out in public.

I saw you do the comment-poll thingy, but the tags weren't working. Did you save the source of the page they sent you to? I didn't so that at first, and the code was funky.

Invisibility...yeah, it's a mixed blessing. I haven't been sat on, but I've been ignored during conversations. In fact, they were talking about me...in front of me. Which annoys me to no end. But, uh, yeah. ^__^;;

Meh. That's a stupid reason to call the cops on you. You have my sympathy.

Honestly, people always act surprised at how much I've written. I had an original story of mine which is like 90+ pages and they always stare at me like I was either crazy or a genius...O.o' Kind of weird.

I've never got sat on, either. O.o' Being around 5'9" helps with that, I think ^.^"

*nods* Mm hm.. like watching hands too. Noticed that lotsa times gestures reflect personality, like people who use as minimal amount of fingers necessary to do stuff like picking up a chip with thumb and index finger tend to be rather neat people who care about their appearance, or like people who move things that are very slight(eg. light board system switches) and use other fingers to control are people who are very careful.

... Hm.. maybe friends were right when they mentioned me has too much free time...

Yeah, I had a friend who'd do the same. She'd learnt/memorized how to solve the thing from certain positions and patterns. You could mess it up any way you want, and after examining it and doing a few turns she could solve it in under a minute. Amazing.
