late night fandom mental babble
Jun. 25th, 2004 03:07 amSo we're like looking at the DC LJ comm and at ff.net when it hits me...
People aren't gonna get the jokes.
I mean... we've been in this fandom for two years now, and it's always been an established fandom in our mind. People are pretty much on the same page, watching and waiting eagerly for new chapters and information and stuff as it comes out of Japan.
And suddenly, there's this huge wave of people that aren't eagerly awaiting tankubon #46 or episode number 364 or what ever it is now... they're eagerily awaiting volume 1 or episode number 20. And that's a biiiiig gap right there.
Fates, Heiji doesn't show up until episode 48, Kid in episode 76 or Ai until 129.
So now there's this huge wave of people coming in who are going to be reading all the little snippets and short fics that were done for an established series where people already know the characters and all these little details... And. Not. Get. The. Jokes. They may laugh now, but... it's hard to -get- the jokes when you're just learning a series.
It's just kinda depressing...
... don't mind me, think a part of me is just waiting now for another e-mail from like back when Inuyasha first came to CN where we got reamed out about how Inuyasha's cloak was -red- not -pink- and I was so stupid, didn't I know anything. -when the stories in question were written before the anime with the red cloak came out... ~_~
*sighs* *looks at PYP* C'mon, Kid, Heiji. Let's go have another bar fight....

Date: 2004-06-25 11:05 am (UTC)There's no reason why you can't writing. When I first joined the fandom, I didn't know who they were either, but I learned fairly quickly. If one knows where to look, and puts in the effort, it's not hard to find the proper information or scanlations and translations.
Boo them if they're lazy.
-_-;; Um...I'm not being too welcoming, am I? XD I don't mean to sound like that, but really, the shows been going on 7-8 years, and people have been joining in all the time. There's no sense to slow down the older fans to wait for the newer fans. If they really cared to learn, they could 1) learn through fanfics (which isn't always the best, but it does help) and 2) research.

Re: You have got to *read* this!
Date: 2004-06-25 02:08 pm (UTC)::ponders "time" a moment, shrugs and gives up:: I have have a very weak understanding of time, and space - hence many bruises from door-handles, coffee tables, car door-frames...
I was introduced to the fandom backwards -
::huggles:: The good ones won't throw their complaints around until they actually have a grasp of the show - the others, well you could try hiding under the desk and siccing Akako on them.

Date: 2004-07-09 12:29 pm (UTC)Same. I watched Conan when it first came out in China, then left after the first few episodes. Never thought about it again, really, but I did like it.
Last year, friend discovered it, gushed about it, and I went "Oh yeah! I remember!" And she pointed me to fics. First was 'Relative Truth' and then I went to Ysa because Becky recommended her in an author's note, and then I somehow moved into Icka's territory.
:D

Er... could do with out the fame, really. Enjoy writing and enjoy making people smile. that's all.
It's just the fact that knowing people aren't going to get the jokes is very depressing, y'know?
... and I would hope we DON'T write Conan/Kid slash!! 0_0

Date: 2004-06-25 03:10 pm (UTC)The show makes you think a bit when you give it a shot, so we won't see the inane rabidness that has hit the fandoms of other shows that have shown on CN.
Full Metal Alchemist, on the other hand...

Date: 2004-06-26 07:48 am (UTC)Ah, I believe those would be called the "ignorant masses". (Quote from some comic I read loong ago...)
Anywho, I had little clue about DC till I went onto FF.Net. Believe me when I say your fics helped me get obssessed with it. Didn't help my obssession with Heiji one bit. (Bad Icka! :p) Don't worry too much, ne?
Besides, I'd think anyone who doesn't laugh at Sir Stinky or Mr. Snufflebottoms just has no sense of humour.
Or are Hakuba clones. *gets whacked* @__@ (Itei...)
^^;
Date: 2004-06-26 05:42 pm (UTC)Anyhows, don't think you should be too worried about the new fans..*Then again I don't think I have much of a say; none of my fictions' even posted online ^^;*
