There's also currently a debate going on at conan_icons about if it's okay to use japanese fanart without permission to make lj icons if anyone's interested.

The thing I have found when it comes to people who steal other people's work via the internet is that most of them have a certain maturity level. Very very low.
Many people that I've talked to on edogawaconan.com don't even stop to think about if they're doing anything wrong by posting someone's fanart or hotlinking. They see it, they like it, they want to share it. The fact that they may not even be hurting someone in the process doesn't even cross their minds. Once it's pointed out, many will stop. Others seem to prove their maturity/gimme-gimme level by blanantly saying they don't give a damn, it's all about them.
-it's a good people barometre, IMHO.
The fact that the mod in question happens to be 13 according to her bio... *shrugs* It makes me uncomfortable.

If you're looking for copyright information, 'fanfiction' + 'copyright' into google brings up a lot of sites. There doesn't seem to be any for fanart, but many of the fanfic copyright sites cover 'media', which includes art.

But I do not believe I will be posting any icons to that community any time soon.
We're also currently debating changing all of our icons to the way my site is - fanart only. Been feeling a little guilty for having offical art in some icons anyway. #^^#

I saw the reaction on that group by the moderator, which is probably one of the reasons I won't be joining. I've long been of the opinion that it's partly that very attitude that helps make copyright law the convoluted and labyrinthian beast it is today.

I note that taking that sort of attitude with non-fanart can get your ass kicked from here to eternity if the artist finds out.

Will admit, that's one of the reasons I pulled all the Conan ones I was using and replaced with my own art. Much easier that way.
