Yesterday, the shoe repair man asked if I was British.
He said it was because I was too polite and nice to be an American Girl. o_O Think it might have had something to do with him working at the mall....
But the day before the Tax Guy asked if I was from Australia, evidently because of my hat and good manners.
I'm just gonna go sit in a corner and go 'Huh?' now....

... Is also rather disturbing to note that this time tomorrow, I should be checking in for the flight to Japan...

Anyway, an original universe fic that just kinda followed us around yesterday. There's a few more characters floating around that kinda wanna get written up.

Finders Keepers
By Icka! M. Chif

Dennis Keeper could find anything. Anything, any time, any where.

Except if it belonged to him. Especially his car keys. He'd gone so far one time as to stick a global tracker on his key ring, only to look it up and discover his keys had somehow made their way to Milwaukee.

Dennis lived no where near Milwaukee.

His downstairs neighbour, Alice, found them the next day, in the fish tank, despite the fact the global tracker was quite insistent on the fact that they were enroute to Chicago and he hadn't known he had a fish tank. He returned the global tracker that day and found he was much happier not knowing where his keys thought they were today.

Still, it was a useful gift to have, even if he could never keep what he found. It always belonged to someone else, or was too big, or in some cases, extremely dangerous to keep.

On the other hand, lost pets, children and various articles were attracted to him like moths to a computer screen. He'd just be walking down the street and suddenly find himself stopped by a sniffling kid, or a mewling kitten or something shiny and a few minutes later, the frantic parent or pet owner or woman who lost her engagement ring would find him and there'd be a happy reunion.

So he didn't mind it so much. It was worth it to see people's smiling faces.

Then there was the dog who found him and wouldn't leave. The dog was a large motley brown mutt, with either some blood hound or mastiff in him from the looks of things, who just showed up one day and wouldn't leave. Eventually Dennis ended up formally adopting him and calling him Fetch.

Because if there was one thing that Dennis found that he hated finding, it was Trouble. Trouble with a capital T, that ends with E, rhymes with Bubble and had the occasional habit of exploding.

Really, what were the odds that he'd find a landmine while walking down the street? Or the one time he walked in on a smuggling ring and ended up getting kidnapped? Or the nuclear submarine in the sewer system?

So if he went missing for more than a day, Alice would go upstairs and send Fetch off to retrieve the hand that fed him. Which Fetch did, grumbling all the way, then would fall over and go back to sleep.

Which is what Dennis was currently waiting for.

Because honestly, while he had no idea how he had found the Lost City of Atlantis, his more pressing concern was that he had no idea how to find a way back.

And a plunnie from last night's chat, musing about customising the Clue board game:
Slash Writers Clue:
'Who did Who with What?!"
.... or if you really wanna get creative: "Who did Who with What WHERE?!"

Oh! Thought of something else about your trip to Japan. If you happen to see the FMA mug set, keychain set, or sipper pull for good prices (I know a place I can get the zipper pull for like $7 plus shipping) <3 <3 <3

And I just bid on an FMA doujinshi that has all of the officers in MINISKIRTS!! I couldn't resist!! OMG Armstrong in a miniskirt *passes out* Will scan it for you!

As for the British, it is somewhat true.. When my mother hit someone's parked car in Britain, they ran out and said, approximately "Oh my! Oh My! Well, you look right shook up! Will you come in for a spot of tea?" At which point htey exchanged insurance papers with my parents over tea.

Personally, I think you should make up a national origin. I don't mean that you ought to pick a country; that'd be too easy. Nope, make a new one up.

Delivery Guy: "You really DO sound sorta British-- you from England or something?"
Icka: "No, no-- I was born in Vickslandenburg, but I've been living over here since I was 19, and before that my family used to vacation in Snorjesborg. Have you evern been to Snorjesborg? They make the *greatest* cheese..."

As for the ficcage, I *liked* that! Major possibilities. And a good name for the dog, too; beats my fic with Watari naming his dog "Futon" and his pet rat "Specimen".

A favor to ask before you go..... **begbegbegbeg** Remember how I mentioned that I would LOVE to see the Psychic-Heiji sequel? Could you *please* send it my way? **begbegbegbegbeg** Am dying to see how it works out-- your ficcage-dog reminded me. =^__^=

S'okay, nobody believes that I've been in California for over 20 years now. One guy even welcomed us to California as we were coming out of Union Station this weekend. ~_~

'Fetch' was orginally named 'Tracker', but we liked 'Fetch' better. *nods* Sometimes the most unorginal names are the most fun.

Is sent! kosagipleasedontkillme Um... she'd prolly welcome any betas and comments. ^^;;

Ysabet, didn't I send that to you? Email me privately from whatever email you're using. I was sure I had.

Gotta finish those edits soon, too. Been sick as... well a dog... since Millennicon.

Hope to soon. You have fun off in Osaka and all. At least half as much fun as we'll all accuse you of having.

Heh, I loved the little story. It's a neat idea, and I feel bad for the guy. :)

Small note: 'Which is what Dennis was currently waiting for' sounds rather awkward, and I'd change it to 'Which was' or the latter was to an is. The different tenses in one sentence sound off.

Anyway, have fun in Japan. I'm sure it will be great!

::g!"" The Slash Writers Clue sounds fascinating... though I feel the questions are more what the "Slash Fangirls" would consider instead... >.>; ::smirk::

Cool original piece! :O It's quirky, intriguing, and well-writ. *^^* Whee! >D

...well, Australia was colonized by Britain right? So Australian is sort of British... X3 ::huggle!::

I get that sometimes too. One of my friend's Moms insists that I have an Irish accent. Despite the fact that I've never been to Ireland, and hell, my mother only went for a two week vacation! And God only knows what living here has done to my English. I tend to pick up the speach patterns of people around me, and mostly I'm around non-native English speakers.

The plunnie is great. That's one of my favorite super powers. Have you read Emma Bull's Finder? Guy named Orient who can track down anything. It's kind of an urban fantasy police procedural.

Well, Icka, your nationality does make some people wondering (me included), esp you're using English spellings in the US...

For one thing, my English instructor (who himself is a British) commented my accent is being British... Well, I have to admit my vioce is less nasal as most Hong Kongers do, but...
