Well other people have already suggested Gargoyles and because you mentioned Gotham City I now have the mental picture of Kid deciding to convince the Joker to check himself into an asylum. I also have the mental image of them visiting New Mexico and getting lost in the miles of nothing around here. They stop and get out of the car and study the map for awhile before Kaito points and says, "I think we should have made a left turn in Albuquerque." I can't think of many series that I'm familiar with that are set in USA but I like the suggestion of them visiting some of the weird real life stuff in this country.
