*Hums 'Yatta Song'* Kyuu Kyuu Kyuu Kyuu... bust bust bust bust...

*ahem*
Anyway. Finished watching 'Detective Academy Q' a couple of weeks ago when we were at 'Neechan's and really enjoyed it. It's by the same people who did Kindachi. ^___^ Yeah, the modivation is pretty easy to figure out on most of the time (details change, so gotta figure those out...) but it kinda makes sense once you realise that most of the cases they're sent on deal with Pluto (at least that's what the HKs call 'em), the organization that's trying to bring down Dan-sensei's Tantei school.

Anyway, Spoilers for the second half of the anime. Prolly won't make sense to the majority of everyone, so consider this an indulgence on my part. Sorry.

Oh, and the whole falling off the bed thing... yeah. That's CANON. *snerk*

Ryuu was waiting for his morning alarm.

No, that wasn't quite right. To put it that way was to make him sound like he was looking forward to it, which was something he supposed he shouldn't. He wasn't quite awake yet anyway, just drifting comfortably in that haze of not-awake.

It sounded like 'Kaasan was already up, shuffling around the kitchen humming a tune slightly off key as she prepared breakfast. The scent of miso, rice and eggs were already beginning to waft in the morning air, mixing with the smells of the house, wood polish, laundry soap and a touch of incense.

He liked the way the house smelled. It smelled like a home. Nothing at all like the way his previous place of residence had smelled. That place had smelled as sterile as the atmosphere. He'd always felt cold there, no matter what the temperature had been, like the place had been freezing him from the inside out.

Now he was warm. Warm and comfortable, even as he was confused by the affection and tenderness both Kyuu and his 'Kaasan bestowed upon him. She'd had even gone so far as cooking him a special dinner to welcome him into their home, giving him the same smiles and hugs that she gave her son. She even went so far as to call them 'Her Boys'.

Her Boys. Like he belonged with them. He belonged to her.

He called her 'Kaasan in his head, where he didn't think anyone would protest. Because it was like having a mother for the first time in his memory. She even scolded him upon occasion, sometimes when he distanced himself, but usually for taking stupid risks to solve cases, in getting hurt. Kyuu would just sit there and smile at him, brown eyes wide and sparkling when it happened, partly in merriment, partly in 'Told you so'.

It wasn't that he blamed the people who had raised him. They were assassins, working for his Grandfather. He might have been their ticket to promotion in the ranks of Pluto, but not everyone could simply adapt to having a small child dumped on them and expect to handle it with grace. After all, death and revenge were their business, not life.

It took being stabbed in the shoulder for that point to be driven home. Yes, he'd taken the dagger meant for Kyuu, accepting the fury and the rage that was not only the murder's, but Pluto's as well, for having uncovered their plots. Pluto had made sure he would live, because he was their 'Prince', their duty, his Grandfather's heir, their sacred tool.

Past that, they didn't care.

He had taken a risk, that day on the bridge, when he asked Kyuu if he could stay with him and 'Kaasan, even for just a short amount of time. But he'd reached his limit. He couldn't go on like that. Melt a little in the friendship of his companions, Dan-sensei's Q Class, then go home and freeze. He had been thawing, slowly but surely, drawn towards the light that were his classmates and especially Kyuu. Like ice, he'd been shattering inside the more he thawed.

Better to be warm, just for a little while, than to let the chill kill him completely.

At the time, he'd made it sound perfectly logical in his head. He asked Kyuu, because the two-toned haired boy was the most likely target for Pluto's wrath. Kyuu was the one to foil their plans the majority of the time, usually without knowing what was going on. So if he stayed close to Kyuu, he could keep an eye out for Pluto's mechanisations and keep his friend safe. Keep Kyuu innocent. True innocence was something rare to find and a delight to see.

When it was quiet like this and he was honest with himself, it was because he simply wanted to be around the other boy. No other plans, no other motives, he just wanted to be close to this person who was the first to call him friend.

Even if Kyuu was a goofball sometimes. Megu really was going to kill him one of these days if he continued keeping track of what colours and patterns of underwear she wore.

He supposed that he really should look into moving elsewhere. Realistically, staying here permanently would bring Kyuu and 'Kaasan more into Pluto's eye. Staying here was probably the most disastrous thing he could do to them. But, like waiting for the alarm, it was something he couldn't keep himself from doing. The longer he stayed, the deeper he was pulled into this comfortable feeling... this -family-. The more he couldn't make himself leave.

He lied to himself by saying that leaving now would probably hurt them as much as it would hurt him.

Only for all of his deductive logic, he wasn't sure if that was a lie or not...

Ryuu was distracted by his musings by Kyuu rolling off his bed and landing on him, just like he did every morning at the same time. Time to get up.

Kyuu grumbled in his sleep, reaching out and groping for the pillow he'd been curled around when he'd rolled out of bed. Failing to find the pillow, Ryuu found himself being grabbed and snuggled against, filling the double role of pillow and cuddle buddy.

Ryuu rolled his eyes. This too, was becoming increasingly familiar. The door opened, their 'Kaasan poking her head in. Eyes went wide for a moment, then she covered her mouth, muffling a giggle.

"Good Morning." He called politely, adding a mental ''Kaasan' to the end of the greeting. Kyuu murmured in protest, attempting to hide his face inside of Ryuu's pyjamas, earning another amused giggle from 'Kaasan.

"You wake him up, I'm going to go finish breakfast. Come out when you're dressed." 'Kaasan instructed, grinned sweetly. She turned to walk away, her voice floating through the open door. "...think it might be time for us to invest in a second bed..."

"I get top bunk." Kyuu muttered, still sleepily attempting to bury himself in Ryuu's pyjama top.

Ryuu couldn't help the chuckle that snuck out of him, both at the comment and the fact that Kyuu's spiky hair tickled his bare skin where the smaller boy had worked the buttons open.

Maybe he was family here after all.

-fin-

Okay, the whole 'hid head in pyjama' thing is our own fault, because the mental pic was amusing. Can't really see them as a couple, at least not unitl Kyuu matures, he's just so innocent, it's scary.

But Kyuu and Ryuu do sparkle at each other. Lots.

Hey, all you Conan fans that made it through this, remember that one comment about how Conan and Heiji could read each other's minds and they violently protested? (it's supposed to be something that married couples do).
Similar comment is made when Ryuu answers a question of Kyuu's before he asks it. Both boys both grin and think it's super cool.

... Ryuu also looks disapointed when Kyuu informs him that they -don't- have to share a bed...

Draw your own conclusion.

*wanders off whistling innocently*
