"He's dying." Kakashi delivered the news in a blank voice, looking up at his other two students with flat eyes that betrayed nothing. He might as well been informing them that they were having ramen for dinner every night this week.
"No..." Sakura looked at him with wide green eyes, one hand clutched up at her heart, as if that part of her hurt. "Can't we do something? Anything?"
Naruto nodded behind her, seconding the sentiment.
"If we were closer to Konoha..." Kakashi shook his head. "There's nothing we can do for him here. The charka drain is..."
The dark haired boy let out a muffled groan, his teeth clenched together as his body tensed, the seal around Orochimaru's mark dissolving as the energy that was usually used to contain the evil faded and dark jagged marks began creeping across his pale skin. Sakura let out a gasp-sob at the marks, terror filling her eyes.
Kakashi sighed, resignation and remorse filling his eyes. "Naruto." He finally said, firming his resolve. "Sakura. Go to the village; see if you can bring a healer back. I'll do what I can for him here."
Neither student moved, both of them realising what their teacher intended to do. The village was still over a days travel away, Sasuke would be dead, one way or another by the time they got back.
"There has to be some other way!" Sakura protested.
Their teacher gave her a look that clearly stated that if she had any other options or ideas, he would clearly love to hear them. She whimpered in response, nothing forthcoming in her mind.
"... We could save him." Naruto spoke up for the first time, his voice oddly subdued as he pressed and open hand to his belly. He looked at them with blue eyes that looked shimmered with red, making them look almost violet.
Silence filled the clearing except for Sasuke's ragged breathing.
Kakashi nodded once, curtly, as he rose from his position next to the prone Uchida heir. Naruto gave him a hesitant smile back, trading places. The blond sat down against the tree Sasuke was leaning against, pulling the slightly larger boy into his lap, so that his dark head was resting against his shoulder, arms wrapped around the weaker form. It was an oddly comforting, yet awkward looking position.
"Sasuke." Naruto bowed his head down, so that their foreheads were almost touching. "Can you hear me? Sasuke."
Dark eyelashes, the envy of many of the village girls, fluttered, the night deep eyes glinting tiredly out. "Yeah." He breathed.
"Kyuubi... I... we think we can save you." The usually cheerful voice was oddly restrained, as if thick with tears. "But there's a price, Sasuke. Do you understand?"
"W-what?" Sasuke was nearly panting, his breathing so shallow, as if he didn't have the energy for more.
"The price, Uchida Sasuke..." Naruto swallowed. "The price is your Name."
Sasuke's eyes went a fraction wider as he took hiccupping breath. The last of the Uchiha clan. It was on that he had become an Avenger, sworn to kill his brother for killing his family.
With out his name, there was no clan. The line was over.
Calculating eyes narrowed as a hand reached up to softly brush Naruto's cheek, as if wiping away tears that had not yet fallen. "Wh-why?" He whispered. It was not so much a question about the price itself, but the motivation behind the offer.
"Because you're Sasuke." Naruto said simply, his unburdened shoulder shrugging. "We're friends... Family, right? Gotta stick together. Don't have anyone else."
A small chuckle was his response. "right." Sasuke gave him a small smile, his hand dropping back down as he lost the energy to keep it up. "... do it." He breathed.
"Done."
Naruto closed his eyes, bringing their faces further together, then inhaled through his mouth. Sasuke's eyes closed as he went completely limp in the blond's grasp, all of his energy apparently being sucked out of his body by Naruto's breath.
"Kakashi-sensei..." Sakura whimpered as the dark marks spread across Sasuke, enveloping the rapidly paling skin with it's twilight colouring. "Should we do something? He's killing him!" The last part came out panicked.
The older teacher set a hand on her shoulder, as much to comfort as to restrain. "No." The command was gentle. "Trust Naruto."
Another whimper left her throat, but she nodded, holding her ground and watching her team-mates with worried eyes.
Orochimaru's marks spread completely across Sasuke's skin, blackening his skin so that he looked so much as a shadow dressed in dark clothing. Naruto practically glowed like a star next to him, his skin gaining a strange radiant golden hue to it. The dark boy gave one last wheezing gasp, then went completely lax like a rag doll, his breathing stopping completely.
"Sasuke..." Sakura breathed. Kakashi gave her shoulder a comforting squeeze, worry filling his visible eye.
Naruto closed his mouth, silently shifting Sasuke around like an oversized marionette, so that their stomachs were aligned against each other, and their faces were nearly touching.
And then he exhaled.
At first, nothing happened. Then the alien dark hue began to uniformly fade, slowly turning first to grey, then dissipating quickly into pale white. Sasuke gave a small shudder, little more than a shiver, then a loud gasp as he pressed himself more closely to Naruto. He closed his mouth around Naruto's, sucking the flowing energy from him like a nursing babe as he reached an arm up around Naruto's head to hold them there.
Their colouring began to reverse, Naruto fading and turning pale as Sasuke became more vibrate. His pale skin and dark hair provided the same contrast as ever, but now there was something else there. Something strange. Something exotic.
Naruto finally reached up and pulled Sasuke's hand off his neck, disengaging their link with a gasp for air, as if he'd been under water for a long time. Sasuke sleepily protested the action, then curled his arms around the blond and drifted off to sleep, a serenely gentle look on his face.
The Kyuubi-avatar panted for breath for a moment, shoulders sagging in weariness as he cracked a pale blue eye at the other two. "He should..." Naruto breathed shallowly "... be fine after a short nap..."
"And you?" Kakashi took the few steps and knelt down in front of the two boys, concern practically radiating off of him.
"Not so... fine." Naruto gave him a ghost of a smile. "Takes a lot... turning someone Kitsune..."
His teacher nodded. "Sleep." He said kindly. "We'll watch over you."
Naruto gave them one more faint smile, then dropped off to sleep as soon as his eyes closed, a cheek resting against Sasuke's forehead.
"Kitsune?" Sakura echoed in confusion, watching the two boys hold on to each other, like worn out puppies, tangled up in each other in sleep. They'd be impossible to get apart
"Hm." Kakashi agreed, rising in a more business like manner. "Might as well make camp here." He shrugged. "I don't think we're going -anywhere- until at least one of them wakes up."
+++ TBC +++
Based off something we read while doing reasearch for the first Ki~Tsu~Ne fic, about kitsune being like chi vampires, they could drain people of their energy (but had to tell the person how to replace it: Soba! -ramen anyone?) and able to transform humans into kitsune if they were willing.
Other sites then turned around and refuted this, and it doesn't quite ring right to us, but the idea stuck anyway.
*falls over*
[Edit:] heh. only name we misspelled was 'Konoha'. Go us!
