Am most bummed. Just discovered that Boy Meets Boy will be ending soon. ;_; Whee! I'm Naked!'s FAQ has more details.
*sigsh* Hope Sandra wraps things up between Skids and Cy. I miss UberGenki!Skids. ^__^

Skids
YOU'RE Skids DiAngelo! He is an enigma. Harley and
Cy's other best friend, Skids has a short
attention span, which is a bad thing. He
wanders away when bored, y'know. Skids is
innocent without being nave, regardless of
being 19. He's going to the same university as
Cy, and appears to be oblivious to his best
friend's longing over him. He gets along very
well with Mik (as opposed to Cy, who really
dislikes the Russian).

**Which Boy Meets Boy Character are you most like?**
brought to you by Quizilla

-if I change one answer, we get Mik. Hee!

And after being haunted by it for 2 days, we gave up and wrote this sucker between Midnight and 1:26 last night, approx. a half hour after we went to bed because the weekly electronica show came on the radio. 'Golden Path' by the Chemical Bros. *sighs* so pretty.
The annoying thing is that the scene that started the whole bloody thing didn't even make it to the fic.

WARNING: For End of Anime Spoilers
... and rambling, cause we were waaaaaay past the thinking point.

Steam City was rebuilding.

After the attacks by Night of Phantom, there wasn't much left of the city but rubble, but like the white mist that gave the city it's name, it was slowly growing back to it's former glory.

Of course, not everyone stayed. Many families left, deciding not to live in what essentially looked like a war zone.

Technically, it had been a war zone.

A war between the Megamatons and the bombs of the Phantom, and the Steam City police force, two nurses, a detective and a small handful of wanted criminals.

The latter won, but not without serious cost. Due to the gravity of her injuries sustained from defusing the bombs that littered the under ground, Red Scorpion and her henchmen Pasta and Doria were granted full pardons of their previous records. Pardons were granted to Le Bread and the Machine Baron as well, for their roles.

Red Scorpion's had lasted a full week before the red-leather clad thief got bored, robbed one of the smaller banks and skipped town, to await the time when both the city and her own wounds were healed enough to play again.

There were a few hard feelings for that, but not many. The smiles that had disappeared from the town the weeks prior to the incidents were back again in full force, despite the hardships.

For the heart of the city, which resided in the body of one under-sized teenage boy, was intact and still beating.

He had been afraid for a while, that the people of his beloved city were going to blame him for the destruction of the city, but none did. In their hearts and minds, it was the fault of the Phantom, not Narutaki. It was a fact that never failed to amaze him, for he blamed himself for a long time after that.

Ling-ling scolded him for it, telling him that even if it was his fault, which it wasn't, he had already paid the price for it.

When the nursing siblings had found him, or more appropriately, he had found him, propped up on Le Bread's shoulder even as he supported the taller blond kaitou, her first reaction had been joy that he had survived the fall that killed the man responsible.

He had escaped, narrowly, and it had taken a good portion of the morning to find his way to them, running across the kaitou in the process. But he had not escaped unscathed.

The broken fingers and arm he had sustained prior to the bombings hindered his movements, as did the other injuries that he had gained, but the wound that shocked her was almost un-seen, hidden under shock of bangs that always hid his right eye.

An eye which was now missing.

He couldn't quite explain it himself, everything past the fall was a blur in his mind, most likely due to the head trauma. But he had been willing to trade his life in exchange for the city, an eye that no one saw was not a big price to pay to him.

In fact, in the weeks that followed, the problem wasn't his adjusting to the lack of perception that it caused, but keeping him in bed so he could heal. He was forever escaping his hospital bed to go help the people, -his- people, rebuild their homes, their shops, their lives.

He was -theirs-.

Everyone was busy then, Goriki's strength was used with demolishing and building buildings, Kawakubo was stuck in bed due to the injuries he had, and Ling-Ling was busy with her nursing duties, even with her inured leg.

Even Lan-Lan, the Black Nurse of Death, her skills were found to be morbidly useful. She worked in the Critical Care area, and with the odd knack that she possessed, divided the patients up between those that were beyond hope, and those that were merely there temporarily. Those that their medical skills could not help, she made their passing easier, granting what few wishes she could to the dieing so that they passed on in peace.

The answer to keeping Narutaki from over working himself and ending up even more injured than before came from an unusual source.

Le Bread's injuries were graver than the rest, internally from the illness that struggled so hard against as well as from the ones he gained delaying Phantom's bomb-setting Megamaton, and he had been bed-ridden from that, coughing up dark clots of blood from his lungs. While it would have been more prudent for him to move to another city where the steam and the dirt in the air would not irritated his breathing, he had chosen to stay.

And he had proven while that he may had trouble breathing, he had no qualms with getting out of bed and sitting on Narutaki if need be. Or occasionally taking a nap on the smaller boy.

Which resulted in many heated clashes of wills, proving that they were both equally stubborn. Due to the fact that they were both supposed bedridden, their conflicts which had once spanned the city, eventually came to span a chessboard.

And occasionally attempting to steal each other's desserts. Just cause.

Narutaki had protested his house being one of the first to be rebuilt, preferring to wait until other people's houses and faculties had been restored, but he had been overruled. Narutaki Tantei Agency was a source of good will and hope for the residents, and as he had healed, so had his house, faster than expected.

To which he had insisted that others share it with him. Lan-Lan had followed her sister with Le Bread's blessing, and he had moved in as well. Kawakubo made no comment on the increase of people in his care, but did admit that occasionally finding the Machine Baron in the basement unsettling.

Once they had hauled the machine-fetishist out of Goriki's berth, his skills proved to be most useful to the scientific community, his robot creations aiding in the rebuilding the subway tunnels and other mechanical parts of the city.

Even if he creeped some people out. He thought they were weird too.

As the city healed, so did Narutaki, who was allowed out with the Nurse sister's permission. His hobby of creating tiny models came in handy with wiring and small jobs that required dexterity. Although sometimes he was drafted as more of a baby-sitter, wresting and playing with the children who still ran through the streets.

It became not un-common to find him shadowed by Le Bread, who people soon came to forget had been a thief, in that haze of 'before rebuilding'. It helped matters that one did not wear a mask and a tux when helping to search for lost cats.

Those that remembered, took it as a sign of the New Steam City that rose out of the rubble of the old one, where a detective and his rival could set aside their differences and become friends.

To which the Kaitou would smile and say nothing.

The Detective had given him the challenge that he needed to sustained him, which also him hope. Now it was his turn to repay the favour.

He aided Narutaki, Narutaki aided the People, the People aided the City, and the City was what forged the bond between them.

And really, hope was a small price to pay for the City they all loved.

-fin-

Okay, dunno if Narutaki actually lost an eye, but we checked the manga, we checked the anime and you NEVER see both eyes. So one brain fuzzy leap of logic later *points* voila.

And probably greatly influanced by a couple of Japanese SD fanarts of Narutaki and a maskless Le Bread using each other for pillows. And the fact that the kaitou is really really protective of Narutaki in the anime. So nyeh.
