[Fic] Children and Adults
Until I can get over to our InJ account:
Children's voices have a certain distinctive sound to them, the fall and rise of the cadence of their voices, the breathless excitement that fills their world. Everything is new, a marvel to explore, touch, feel and experience.
Adults lack that endless wellspring of enthusiasm, usually losing it in the mid to later teens as other concerns in life took over. School, friends, homework, part-jobs, murders...
Shin'ichi used to be proud of his voice, the even mature tones, the smug levelness, even when faced with threats of dismemberment.
He still has that level mature sound, even after being shrunk into Conan, but instead of earning him respect and equality as it did previously, it's now a detriment, causing him to stand out and labeling him as 'weird' or 'strange'.
He's been working on it but old habits die hard.
But still, it's only vaguely embarrassing to realise that the enthusiasm in his voice isn't faked as he talks about the latest plot of Kamen Yaiba with Genta, Mitsuhiko and Ayumi.
Ayumi spends most of the day walking on tip-toe before Conan can bring himself to ask why.
"It's to be taller, silly!" Ayumi said proudly, doing a small pirouette on one toe. "Just like a grown-up!" She giggled as if it should be the most obvious thing in the world. To her, it probably is, but he can't help the slightly bitter laugh that escapes his throat under the illusion of his sarcastic sense of humour.
"Don't." He chokes out.
"Why not?" Mitsuhiko demands, both he and Genta rising up on theo toes as well, adding a few looming inches over him. "Adults have all the fun!"
"Yeah!" Genta frowns, as if Conan's brought the clouds to rain on their parade. "They get to stay up late and get the second piece of cake!"
"Does it make them happy?" Ai's quiet voice interjected. "Staying up late? That second piece of cake?"
The Shonen Tantei froze, looking almost comedic as they stared at Ai. They slowly sank down, their heels touching the ground as they contemplated her words.
"Adults do a lot of bad things." Ayumi said slowly as if weighing her words carefully.
"Lot of bad things." Mitsuhiko nodded gravely.
Genta nodded solemnly. "Very bad things." He said, his usually booming voice soft. Conan swallowed, his heart sinking to the bottom of his stomach. Genta had just been grabbed and held with a knife at his throat the day before because of a robbery gone bad.
"Kids don't do that, do they?" Ai continued.
Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta shook their heads.
Ai nodded. "Don't be in such a hurry to grow up." She advised, her voice fondly gentle. "You'll have a long time to worry about adult things."
The Shonen Tantei nodded, their previously joyful expressions somber and grave as they contemplates the future. Cohan felt his own mood sour for bringing theirs down.
"But..." Ayumi said thoughtfully, her voice hopeful. "We can still walk on tippy-toe cause it's fun, right?"
