SCA: Bestiary ~ Kea

Thanks to everyone who helped

Entering this in tomorrows Baronial Anniversary / A&S Comptition.
And y'know the funny part?
We were all worried about drawing this style. Then sat there and muttered darkly about drawing like a young kid. (no offense) *thuds head on desk* It's -easy-. Geh.
We probably really could do our own Hyaku Monogatari. Hmm...

[Edit: Got a 4 out of 10. Needed more documention, they would have prefered less modern paper/pens and they would have liked to have seen it coloured.
-the last I find boggling/amusing, I -said- I was doing pen and ink. >_O

Goodness what a miffed look. Very cool. Nice ink work (I'm assuming ink and not just some very good pencil work?) I like the pattern around the edge.

[identity profile] ickaimp.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, is ink work. Sumi brush pen and a couple of technical pens.
Most of the birds have miffed looks, thought that was weird.

Got the art style and border pattern from The Aberdeen Bestiary Project (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/bestiary/).
The art's pretty cool.

Very granite grey. It's not called the silver city for nothing. ^__^
Is also one of the sunniest (and coldest) cities in Scotland (which sells itself as rainy) from what I'm told. Very Windy. European capital of Oil/Petrol from off-shore in the northern sea.

I'm studying at the Art school of the other university, at the other end of town. Is pretty nice :c3
What I like most about it is how the sky is so moody and yet seems so close you can touch it.
Read somewhere that in ancient Greek Mythology, they said the God Atlas held the skies up around the Scottish Highlands, so I can understand why now. ^_^

You did that? Cooooooooooool. The style looks like it goes back to the Dark Ages.

[identity profile] ickaimp.livejournal.com 2006-03-24 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Coolness. That's what it's supposed to look like. #^^#

YOU are going to SCORE. (Dear gods, I sound like one of those spam viagra emails.) This looks perfect-- particularly Anglo-Saxon or Norse in style (more the former, especially with that border) and it fits with all the descriptions that I saw you get. **cheers wildly** GoSpeed!Icka!!!

Oooooh.. a European medieval-style Hyaku Monogatari? Dooooooo iiiiiiiiit! Or a bestiary of Japanese youki, seen from the perspective of some poor human who got caught up in the Thousand Monster March and managed to get out with their hide intact...

A little bit of column A, a little bit of Column B.
Um... European, Middle East and Asia is what I'd like to try to do, just in pen & ink, no colour. And get some stories/legends that go with.
100 Monsters/Demons/Ghosts. ^_______^

You know what strikes me, though? It'd make a kickass embroidery pattern.

[identity profile] poe-nui.livejournal.com 2006-03-25 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
*nods enthousiastically* It would make an Awesome embroidery pattern!

It's gorgeous.

Great looking Kea~ ^__^

So intent!

[identity profile] ickaimp.livejournal.com 2006-03-27 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
They are intent too... on destroying a lot of colourful things. They're fun little buggers.

[identity profile] atropus.livejournal.com 2006-03-25 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really cool ^_^

..but does it make me a bitch for thinking that the beak should be more hooked and have bigger nostrilly bits? I mean it is a parrot. *hides*

Image

The body is seriously cool though.. awesome.

Know I said it when I talked to you earlier, but the drawing was based off the discriptions I got from people on LJ earlier. #^^#

Thanks! ^__________^

Yup, in an A&S competition, the actual art is the easiest part of it. Having been to a number of these things, I've seen people with art that wasn't as good as others win because of "authenticity" issues. Period materials and tools are pretty much MANDATORY in kingdom-level A&S competitions. Hopefully these things aren't that difficult to find or make....
